Michael told Claire not to jump to conclusions.
“A suspicious conversation is not evidence of murder.”
“I know.”
“Thomas had a documented cardiac condition.”
“I know.”
“But?”
Claire stared at the old death certificate.
“But my father apparently believed something might happen.”
Michael agreed to quietly investigate.
Thomas had died at home.
Lauren claimed she found him unconscious in his study.
Derek had been attending a business dinner.
Margaret had been at a charity event.
Ryan was in Boston.
Claire had been in Chicago.
Lauren called emergency services at 9:14 p.m.
Thomas was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The original report mentioned no suspicious circumstances.
Then Michael found the paramedic.
Retired now.
He remembered Thomas.
“There was something strange.”
Claire leaned forward.
“What?”
“The daughter.”
“Lauren?”
“She kept asking us whether we needed his medications.”
“Why is that strange?”
“Usually family members tell us what somebody took. She wanted the bottles removed.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“What happened to them?”
“No idea.”
Margaret said she threw them away after the funeral.
Michael obtained Thomas’s pharmacy records.
One prescription was missing from the medication inventory recorded by paramedics.
Digoxin.
A heart medication.
Thomas had stopped taking it months earlier.
Yet it had been refilled two weeks before his death.
By someone using his account.
Claire sat silently.
Michael said, “This still proves nothing.”
“Who collected it?”
“We’re trying to determine that.”
The pharmacy had old security archives stored off-site.
Retrieval took four days.
The image was grainy.
But the woman at the counter was recognizable.
Lauren.
Claire stared at the photograph.
Michael immediately contacted law enforcement.
The custody hearing remained scheduled.
Authorities did not arrest Lauren.
Not yet.
There was no proof Thomas had ingested the medication.
But the investigation into his death reopened quietly.
Then Derek disappeared.
Two days before court, he emptied a joint bank account containing eighty thousand dollars.
Lauren called Claire hysterically.
“He left me!”
Claire said nothing.
“You did this!”
“No.”
“You destroyed everything!”
“You did that yourself.”
“Where is Derek?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying!”
Claire ended the call.
Derek returned the next morning.
He claimed he had merely moved the money for legal expenses.
But something had changed between him and Lauren.
They arrived at court separately.
They sat apart.
And when Lauren whispered something to him before the hearing, Derek replied loudly enough for Claire to hear.
“I’m not going to prison for you.”
Lauren’s face became white.
Michael heard it too.
“Interesting,” he whispered.
The hearing began.
Emma testified privately with the judge.
Claire was not permitted inside.
Neither was Lauren.
Emma emerged twenty-three minutes later.
She walked directly toward Claire.
“Did I do okay?”
Claire hugged her.
“You told the truth?”
“Yes.”
“Then you did perfectly.”
Lauren watched them.
For once she said nothing.
At 2:40 p.m., the judge returned.
The courtroom stood.
The judge began reading her findings.
The abandonment had occurred.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Lauren had knowingly left Emma in dangerous winter conditions.
Derek had participated.
Prior emotional mistreatment had been substantiated.
Financial exploitation remained under separate investigation.
The court granted Claire permanent guardianship pending final adoption proceedings.
Lauren’s unsupervised parental rights were suspended.
Emma squeezed Claire’s hand.
Claire closed her eyes.
It should have ended there.
Instead, the courtroom doors opened.
Michael’s assistant rushed inside.
She handed him four certified envelopes.
Michael read the first page.
Then looked directly at Claire.
