THE LEDGER AFTER THE WEDDING / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - Rose Vale Hart

The paternity results confirmed what Dominic had already known.

He was Rose’s biological father.

Evelyn requested primary custody, financial support paid through a court-supervised trust, and strict limits on Dominic’s ability to influence the child’s future.

Dominic attempted to portray Evelyn as vindictive.

The judge disagreed.

The court reviewed the hospital nondisclosure agreement, the deleted messages, and Dominic’s attempt to hide Rose’s existence during his wedding.

Evelyn received full decision-making authority.

Rose’s legal name became Rose Vale Hart, not because Evelyn wished to honor Dominic, but because she refused to allow him to erase his responsibility.

The trust was funded through legally seized personal assets that were separate from money owed to fraud victims.

Evelyn did not move into a mansion.

She rented a sunny two-bedroom apartment near a park and returned to work gradually. Rose slept in a small white crib beside a window where morning light warmed the room.

Naomi visited every Sunday with groceries and increasingly ridiculous baby toys.

Celeste visited only after asking permission.

The first time she came, she brought no expensive gift. She carried a children’s book and a handwritten apology.

“I do not expect a place in her life,” Celeste told Evelyn.

“You helped protect her future,” Evelyn replied. “That matters.”

They were not friends in the simple sense.

Too much pain connected them.

But over time, they developed something quieter and more honest: respect without illusion.

On Rose’s first birthday, Celeste sent a card containing only one sentence.

May she grow up knowing that the truth is never something to be ashamed of.

Evelyn placed it inside a memory box.
