THE LEDGER AFTER THE WEDDING / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Empire Falls

The investigation lasted seven months.

Vale Meridian’s offices were searched under court authorization. Servers were secured before additional files could be destroyed.

Richard Vale, the former financial officer, emerged from hiding and agreed to testify. He had not stolen from the company as Dominic claimed. He had discovered the fraud and fled after receiving threats.

The brass key had been mailed to Evelyn because Richard had seen her name in Dominic’s private communications. He believed she was the one person close enough to Dominic to understand the danger and strong enough not to accept his money.

The evidence revealed that Dominic had created false companies, forged signatures, bribed inspectors, and forced vulnerable people from valuable properties.

He had also used private settlements and nondisclosure agreements to silence former employees.

His arrest happened outside the same courthouse where his attorneys had once intimidated tenants.

Cameras surrounded him as officers escorted him toward a waiting vehicle.

Dominic attempted to remain composed.

Then a reporter shouted a question about Rose.

His expression changed.

For the first time, he could not control the story.

Celeste received a civil annulment. She returned money connected to fraudulent transactions and helped create a compensation fund for displaced families.

The Arden Foundation lost several sponsors, but Celeste continued cooperating.

Evelyn’s legal clinic represented many of the affected tenants.

Using the ledger and newly recovered documents, they helped families reclaim property, receive settlements, and clear false records created against them.

Dominic’s attorneys offered Evelyn one final private agreement.

They promised a large payment if she withdrew from public testimony.

She declined.

In court, Evelyn described how Dominic used generosity to approach the people he intended to manipulate.

“He believed kindness could be purchased,” she said. “He believed fear could be converted into silence.”

Dominic watched her from the defense table.

She never looked away.
