Chapter 1 - The Man Who Controlled Everything

Eight months earlier, Dominic Vale had seemed like the safest man Evelyn had ever known.
He was polished, intelligent, and endlessly composed. At thirty-eight, he had already built Vale Meridian into one of the most successful private investment firms in the state. Financial magazines called him disciplined. Business partners called him brilliant.
Evelyn eventually learned that both descriptions meant the same thing.
Dominic controlled everything.
He controlled the temperature in his penthouse, the restaurants they visited, the people invited to dinner, and the exact amount of time Evelyn was expected to spend speaking to his colleagues.
At first, his attention felt like devotion.
He remembered how she took her coffee. He sent a car whenever she worked late at the nonprofit legal clinic. He filled her apartment with flowers after every argument.
Evelyn mistook preparation for kindness.
They had met at a fundraising event where she was helping families threatened with illegal eviction. Dominic had donated two hundred thousand dollars that night. He told her he admired people who fought for those without power.
“You make people feel protected,” she said during their third dinner.
Dominic smiled.
“Protection is just control used responsibly.”
At the time, she thought he was joking.
Their relationship remained private because Dominic claimed publicity could damage both their careers. He never posted photographs of them and refused to attend events where reporters might appear.
When Evelyn asked whether he was ashamed of her, he took her hand and spoke with perfect calm.
“I am protecting what belongs to us.”
The words should have frightened her.
Instead, they made her feel chosen.
Five months into their relationship, Evelyn became pregnant.
She told Dominic in his private office after closing time. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he stood, walked to the window, and stared down at the city.
Evelyn expected shock. Perhaps even fear.
What she did not expect was calculation.
“Who else knows?” he asked.
“My doctor.”
“No friends?”
“Not yet.”
He turned around.
“Keep it that way.”
Evelyn’s happiness faded.
Dominic approached her and placed both hands gently on her shoulders.
“My company is finalizing a merger. A family announcement could complicate negotiations. Give me a few weeks.”
“A baby is not a complication.”
May you like
“Of course not.”
But his eyes had already moved beyond her, searching for risks she could not see.
