Chapter 9 - The Wedding Designed As A Trap

Six hundred guests received invitations.
Only twenty knew the ceremony was part of a federal operation.
Clara wanted witnesses.
Arthur valued reputation more than blood.
A public setting reduced the chance of immediate violence.
Or so they believed.
The ceremony took place at the Vancewood estate because Clara insisted on reclaiming the house where fear had governed her life.
She wore burgundy instead of white.
Arthur hated burgundy.
That was enough reason.
Margaret helped with the veil.
Her hands shook while fastening it.
“You don’t have to do this.”
“Yes, I do.”
“You already escaped him.”
Clara looked at herself in the mirror.
“No. I moved away from him. That’s different.”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“I should have protected you.”
“You should have.”
The answer hurt them both.
Clara continued.
“But you can protect Nora now.”
Margaret nodded.
Nora remained in federal protection.
Elias attended under another name.
Naomi’s agents posed as staff.
Julian waited at the altar.
Arthur arrived nineteen minutes before the ceremony.
Every agent tensed.
He walked through the front doors in a black tuxedo.
Alone.
No weapon.
No visible security.
And he smiled.
Clara saw him from the staircase.
For one instant she became nine years old.
Then Julian looked at her.
The fear weakened.
Arthur approached.
“May I walk my daughter down the aisle?”
Naomi had warned Clara he might try.
She had not decided what she would do.
Now Arthur extended his arm.
Clara took it.
Not because she forgave him.
Because she wanted him to understand something.
She was no longer afraid to stand beside him.
Arthur leaned close.
“You think you’ve won.”
Clara kept smiling for the guests.
“No.”
“Good.”
“I know I haven’t.”
His smile faltered.
The ceremony proceeded.
Julian said his vows.
Not romantic promises written for wealthy guests.
Simple ones.
“I will believe you when others call you crazy. I will stand beside you when standing beside you costs me something. And I will never ask you to forget what happened simply because remembering is inconvenient.”
Clara nearly broke.
Her vows were shorter.
“I spent most of my life being told what love required me to endure. You taught me love is supposed to make endurance unnecessary.”
Arthur’s face hardened.
They exchanged rings.
Applause filled the chapel.
For forty minutes everything seemed normal.
Then Clara began feeling dizzy.
She assumed stress.
During the reception, Dr. Cole appeared.
He wore a physician’s coat beneath his charcoal suit.
Julian spotted him near the terrace.
Agents moved.
Cole vanished into the crowd.
Arthur remained at his table.
Calm.
Too calm.
Clara touched her back.
Pain.
Something sharp pressed beneath her corset.
Margaret approached.
“You’re bleeding.”
Clara turned.
Blood darkened the burgundy lace.
Julian rushed toward her.
Arthur lifted his champagne.
And smiled.
Someone had altered Clara’s wedding gown.
The key from Vault Three had disappeared from federal evidence two days earlier.
Now it had been sewn into her corset.
The message was unmistakable.
Arthur could still reach her.
Anywhere.
They moved Clara upstairs.
Julian followed.
Naomi ordered the estate locked down.
Guests became confused.
Security teams searched for Cole.
Then Arthur simply stood and walked upstairs.
May you like
Nobody stopped him.
Because the two agents assigned to the staircase had already disappeared.
