Chapter 11 - The Father Who Woke Up In Handcuffs

Arthur survived.

Margaret had injected him with the sedative Cole intended for Clara.

He woke six hours later inside a guarded hospital room.

His hands were cuffed to the bed.

Naomi Hale stood beside the window.

Arthur smiled.

“You have nothing.”

Naomi placed a tablet on his blanket.

His recorded confession played.

Yes.

I shot Theodore.

Arthur’s smile faded.

Naomi showed him the tunnel video.

The federal agents had recorded Nora’s appearance.

Cole’s syringe.

Arthur’s attempted escape.

Then came the financial evidence.

Project Orpheus.

Illegal medical trials.

Bribery.

Identity fraud.

Obstruction.

Attempted kidnapping.

Conspiracy.

Arthur listened.

Then he laughed again.

“You think I built this alone?”

Naomi said nothing.

“That is your weakness. All of you want one monster because one monster makes the story comfortable.”

Arthur leaned closer.

“There were senators. Judges. pharmaceutical executives. intelligence contractors.”

“Names.”

“You’ll never get them.”

“We already have servers.”

“You have what I allowed you to find.”

That sentence mattered.

Naomi reported it to Julian.

Theodore’s emergency trust provided additional answers.

When activated using the brass key and biometric confirmation from Julian, control of forty-three percent of Vancewood Biomedical’s voting shares transferred into an independent victims’ restitution foundation.

Arthur had spent twenty years trying to find and destroy the trust.

He had failed.

At an emergency shareholder meeting, Julian executed the transfer.

Arthur lost control of the company before leaving the hospital.

Executives resigned.

The board collapsed.

Federal monitors entered.

Compensation funds were created for surviving Orpheus subjects.

Clara refused to become chairwoman.

Instead, she gave Elias a seat on the victims’ oversight committee.

Nora received independent care.

Margaret filed for divorce.

For the first time in thirty-eight years, she moved into a home where Arthur did not possess a key.

Dr. Cole was arrested at the airport.

He immediately requested a cooperation agreement.

Arthur called him a coward.

Cole replied through his attorney.

“I learned from the best.”

The public scandal exploded.

Television networks surrounded the Vancewood estate.

Politicians returned donations.

Universities removed Arthur’s name from buildings.

Former employees came forward.

Clara watched none of it.

She and Julian disappeared for three weeks.

Not to Europe.

Not to some private island.

They rented a small house along the coast of Maine near Elias.

Clara woke from nightmares.

Julian woke with her.

They walked beside the ocean.

They cooked badly.

They argued over ordinary things.

For Clara, ordinary disagreement felt miraculous.

One morning she realized Julian had left the front door unlocked while taking out the trash.

She stared at the open door.

For years, an unlocked door had represented danger.

Now it represented choice.

Julian returned.

“You okay?”

Clara nodded.

“I think so.”

He looked at the door.

Understanding crossed his face.

He did not close it.

That night they finally talked about their marriage.

“It started as a deal,” Clara said.

“Yes.”

“You could leave.”

“So could you.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

She looked toward the ocean.

“What if I don’t know how to be normal?”

Julian laughed softly.

“I have terrible news about my qualifications.”

She smiled.

Then he became serious.

“I didn’t marry normal.”

“What did you marry?”

“You.”

For a moment, that was enough.

Then his phone rang.

Naomi.

Julian answered.

May you like

Her voice was strained.

“Arthur escaped.”
