Chapter 8 - The Memory Clara Could Not Survive
Clara left Vermont believing she had helped imprison her own sister.
Julian knew the thought was destroying her.
For two days she barely spoke.
Then Nora requested to see her again.
Alone.
Clara refused to leave Julian outside.
Nora accepted.
This time there was no key.
Clara sat across from her sister.
“I’m sorry.”
Nora studied her.
“For what?”
“For locking you in.”
Nora frowned.
“You don’t remember.”
“No.”
Nora looked toward Julian.
“They broke her worse than me.”
Clara’s throat tightened.
“Tell me.”
So Nora did.
The night of July 19, young Clara and Nora followed Arthur into the basement laboratory.
They witnessed Arthur arguing with Theodore Vance.
Theodore had discovered Project Orpheus.
He threatened to expose everything.
Arthur shot him.
Not fatally.
Clara and Nora screamed.
Dr. Cole caught Nora.
Clara ran.
Then Clara returned.
She stole the brass key from Arthur’s jacket and unlocked a treatment room containing Elias and three other children.
Arthur came after them.
Clara made a choice.
She pushed Nora into a secure storage room and locked the door.
Nora screamed.
Young Clara promised to return.
She never did.
“But why?” adult Clara asked.
Nora’s eyes filled.
“Because the room was fireproof.”
Clara stopped breathing.
Nora smiled through tears.
“You saved me.”
The fire came later.
Arthur started it to destroy evidence.
Clara had hidden Nora inside the only chamber capable of surviving it.
Cole found Nora after the fire.
Arthur believed his younger daughter was dead.
Cole secretly kept her alive as leverage.
For years he moved her between treatment facilities.
“Why didn’t you escape?”
Nora touched the scar behind her ear.
“They kept treating me.”
Memory suppression.
Sedation.
Isolation.
By adulthood Nora no longer knew what was real.
Then another piece surfaced.
“The key doesn’t only open Vault Three.”
Clara stared at her.
“What else?”
“Father’s house.”
“Which door?”
Nora whispered, “Under the chapel.”
The Vancewood mansion contained a private chapel built by Arthur’s grandfather.
Beneath it were burial crypts.
At least officially.
Julian and federal agents searched the property through a sealed warrant Naomi obtained using Cole’s testimony.
Arthur’s attorneys fought the warrant.
They lost.
Behind one stone crypt was a concealed elevator.
It descended four levels.
The chamber below contained servers.
Thousands of files.
Project Orpheus had not ended in 2003.
It expanded.
Arthur had spent twenty years collecting neurological data through private hospitals, addiction clinics, psychiatric programs and juvenile detention partnerships.
Some patients consented.
Others did not.
Julian found the second-generation files.
His name appeared because Theodore had secretly submitted Julian’s genetic profile to researchers.
Not as a subject.
As a comparison.
Arthur had later used it.
Why remained unclear.
Naomi ordered the servers seized.
Arthur disappeared before agents reached the mansion.
Margaret was found locked inside her bedroom.
Security footage showed Arthur leaving through an underground garage forty minutes before the raid.
Dr. Cole also vanished.
But not before leaving one final message on Clara’s phone.
YOUR FATHER KNOWS ABOUT THE WEDDING PLAN.
Clara stared at the screen.
The wedding was twelve days away.
Julian looked at her.
“We cancel.”
“No.”
“Clara.”
“If we cancel, he knows we’re afraid.”
“He already knows.”
“Then we give him something else to watch.”
The wedding became bait.
Federal agents objected.
Naomi objected louder.
Clara insisted.
Arthur had built his identity around control.
He would never allow his daughter’s marriage to proceed without intervention.
Especially now that Julian legally represented the greatest threat to the Vancewood empire.
The wedding would draw Arthur out.
They were right.
They were also catastrophically wrong about how he would come.
