Chapter 10 - The Call That Arthur Never Expected

Inside the bridal suite, events unfolded exactly as Arthur had planned.

Almost.

Clara collapsed.

Julian discovered the key.

Arthur entered with Cole and two compromised security guards.

Cole carried the syringe.

Arthur demanded the key.

Julian activated the hidden call.

What Arthur had not predicted was who would answer.

Marcus Hale had spent the previous forty-eight hours researching Theodore Vance’s coded estate documents.

The moment Julian read the engraving, Marcus understood.

Vault Three was not merely a physical vault.

0719-VW-3 was also the authorization key for a sealed legal trust.

Theodore had created it after the 2003 shooting.

Marcus shouted through the phone.

“Julian, the key controls Theodore’s emergency trust.”

Arthur lunged.

The lights went out.

Then heavy footsteps hit the corridor.

Naomi’s federal agents had restored access to the staircase.

Arthur reacted instantly.

“Cole.”

The physician grabbed Clara.

Julian attacked him.

The syringe flew across the room.

One security guard tackled Julian.

Clara crawled toward the key.

Arthur reached it first.

He ran toward the adjoining dressing room.

There was a concealed exit behind a mirrored panel.

Clara knew it.

So did Margaret.

The panel opened.

Arthur disappeared.

Julian shoved the guard away and followed.

Cole ran after Arthur.

Federal agents stormed the suite.

Naomi found Clara bleeding but conscious.

“Where’s Julian?”

“Tunnel.”

Naomi cursed.

The old service passage descended behind the bedroom walls and emerged near the family mausoleum.

Julian chased Arthur through darkness.

Cole moved behind them.

At the tunnel junction Arthur stopped.

He held the key.

Julian stood fifteen feet away.

“It’s over.”

Arthur laughed.

“You still think this is about Clara?”

“It stopped being about what you think a long time ago.”

Arthur looked almost proud.

“Theodore said things like that.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“You shot him.”

“Yes.”

The admission came casually.

Cole froze behind Arthur.

Julian’s phone was still connected.

Marcus was still listening.

So was Naomi.

Arthur did not know.

“He was weak,” Arthur continued. “He discovered something that could reshape trauma medicine and wanted to destroy it because a few children suffered.”

“A few children?”

“History forgets the cost of useful discoveries.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Clara won’t.”

Arthur smiled.

“Clara remembers whatever I allow her to remember.”

A voice came from behind them.

“No.”

Arthur turned.

Margaret stood at the tunnel entrance.

She held Cole’s dropped syringe.

Her hand trembled.

But she pointed it toward Arthur.

“You don’t control her anymore.”

Arthur laughed.

“You?”

Margaret’s fear returned instantly.

Decades of it.

Julian saw her hand lower.

Arthur stepped toward his wife.

“You’ve never had the courage.”

Margaret looked at Clara, who had reached the tunnel with Naomi.

Then at Nora, appearing behind two federal agents.

Arthur saw his younger daughter.

For the first time that night, real shock crossed his face.

“Nora?”

Nora stared at him.

“You told everyone I died.”

Arthur whispered, “You should have.”

May you like

Margaret’s fear disappeared.

She drove the syringe into Arthur’s neck.
