Chapter 7 - The Morning After)

Emma slept for fourteen hours.
Rachel did not sleep at all.
Police questioned everyone.
Richard Weller denied kidnapping Emma.
He claimed one of his employees had picked up the child because Dean had asked him to.
Dean denied it.
Susan provided details about the black SUV.
Caleb provided recordings.
Rachel provided Evelyn's documents.
By sunrise the story was no longer simple enough for anyone to dismiss.
But neither was it finished.
Weller was held for questioning.
The woman found inside the mill was identified as an employee of Red Oak Holdings.
Dean was questioned separately.
Rachel refused to see him.
She returned to Susan's house just after six in the morning.
Emma was asleep on the couch with her rabbit beneath her arm.
Rachel sat on the floor beside her.
Susan brought coffee.
For several minutes neither woman spoke.
Finally Susan said, "You got her back."
Rachel nodded.
That was the only fact that mattered.
But it was not the only problem.
Dean had betrayed her.
Her father was alive.
Her mother had hidden a thirty-year-old conspiracy.
Her house carried fraudulent debt.
Richard Weller wanted whatever was hidden beneath the western field.
And somewhere inside all of that was an unanswered question.
Why now?
If Weller had known about the property for decades, why move aggressively now?
Rachel opened Evelyn's documents again.
The answer was buried in zoning maps.
A proposed highway connector would pass within half a mile of the property.
Commercial developers had already begun acquiring nearby land.
The Hayes property sat directly between two larger parcels controlled by Red Oak.
Without Rachel's land, Weller's development plan would be divided.
With it, he controlled nearly the entire corridor.
The house itself might be worth a million.
The land could eventually be worth several times that.
But Evelyn's letter said money was not the real prize.
Something was beneath the western field.
Rachel looked at Susan.
"Tell me about the tree."
"What tree?"
"The oak Dad wanted to build a treehouse in."
Susan's face tightened.
"I remember it."
"Mom said she hid a second ledger where Nathan promised to build me a treehouse."
Susan slowly sat down.
"Your grandfather hated that tree."
"Why?"
"He said the ground near it was dangerous."
Rachel frowned.
"Dangerous how?"
"I don't know."
"Sinkhole?"
"Maybe."
Rachel remembered being forbidden to play near the western fence as a child.
She had assumed snakes.
"Grandpa discovered something in 1989."
"That is what Evelyn said?"
"Yes."
Susan looked troubled.
"Your grandfather worked for the county."
Rachel had forgotten.
Not in a glamorous role.
He maintained property maps and old utility records.
"What could he have discovered?"
Susan shook her head.
The question remained unanswered until nine twenty.
Rachel received a call from Detective Lena Morris.
"We found something in Weller's office."
"What?"
"Maps."
Rachel stood.
"What kind?"
"Your property."
"Recent?"
"Some."
"And the others?"
"One is dated 1990."
Rachel felt a chill.
"What does it show?"
"A structure."
"What structure?"
"It is labeled municipal access chamber C-seven."
Rachel had never heard the phrase.
Morris continued.
"The chamber does not appear on current county maps."
"What is it?"
"We don't know yet."
Rachel looked at Emma.
"Where is it?"
There was a pause.
"According to the old map, under the western section of your property."
Exactly where the oak tree had stood.
Rachel closed her eyes.
Detective Morris continued.
"Rachel, until we understand what this is, I strongly recommend that you do not return to the property alone."
"Dean is still there."
"No."
Rachel opened her eyes.
"What?"
"Officers went to locate him about twenty minutes ago."
"And?"
"He is gone."
Rachel's anger returned.
"Of course he is."
"His phone is off."
"His truck?"
"Still at the house."
Rachel frowned.
"If his truck is there, how did he leave?"
"We don't know."
Rachel thought of Nathan.
Weller.
The western field.
"Did you search the house?"
"Not without additional authority."
Rachel suddenly remembered the hidden camera.
"Detective."
"Yes?"
"There is a camera in the dining room."
Morris paused.
"Dean installed it."
"Can you access it?"
Rachel had no idea.
But Dean's office might contain the system.
She agreed to meet Morris at the house.
An hour later they entered together.
The dining room had not changed.
Rachel hated seeing it.
The bone was gone because police had collected it.
The steel bowl remained.
Morris found the hidden camera in less than five minutes.
It was inside a smoke detector.
The recorder was located in Dean's office.
Most of the recent files had been deleted.
But not permanently.
A technician recovered part of the previous afternoon.
The video showed Emma approaching Dean.
It showed Dean laughing.
It showed the bone.
It showed the rough pat on Emma's head.
It showed Rachel arriving.
The sound was clear.
Daddy, I'm hungry.
Then take it.
Take it, kid.
Rachel turned away.
Detective Morris watched without expression.
Then the video reached the confrontation.
Dean said, "It's just a joke."
Rachel slapped him.
Morris paused the footage.
"Your husband may have intended to use this."
"I know."
The technician recovered another file.
Older.
Recorded three days before.
Dean sat alone in the dining room.
A man entered.
Nathan Cole.
Rachel stopped breathing.
Her father looked older than in the photograph.
Tired.
He and Dean argued quietly.
The audio was faint.
The technician increased the volume.
Nathan said, "You were supposed to protect her."
Dean replied, "You don't get to say that."
"I brought you into this because I thought you were different."
"You brought me into this to spy on your daughter."
Rachel gripped the back of a chair.
Nathan continued.
"Weller is moving too fast."
Dean said, "Because of the chamber?"
Nathan looked toward the camera.
For one terrible moment it seemed as though he were looking directly at Rachel.
Then he said, "Because someone opened it."
The recording ended.
Morris turned toward Rachel.
"What chamber?"
Rachel whispered, "The one under my land."
The detective's phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed while listening.
"What?"
Rachel's heart raced.
Morris ended the call.
"Rachel, we found Dean."
"Where?"
Morris looked toward the window.
"In the western field."
Rachel's stomach dropped.
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
"He was unconscious beside a collapsed section of ground."
Rachel looked toward the field.
"The chamber."
Morris nodded.
"And there was someone else down there."
"Who?"
"We don't know yet."
Rachel already did.
May you like
Nathan.
Her father had returned home.
