Chapter 13 - The Truth About Claire)

Claire Bannon had been the woman buried under Evelyn's name.
That much Rachel knew.
What she did not know was why Claire had been at the hospital that night.
Evelyn resisted the question until Rachel refused to speak about anything else.
They sat together in Susan's kitchen after Emma had fallen asleep.
Dean was not there.
Nathan remained under observation.
Richard Weller was in custody.
Peter Donnelly had reunited with Troy.
For the first time in days there was no immediate emergency.
Which meant there was nowhere left for Evelyn's secret to hide.
"Claire worked for me," Evelyn finally said.
Rachel stared.
"You told me she was a stranger."
"I said she had no known family."
"That isn't the same thing."
"No."
"What did she do?"
"She delivered records."
"For Harbor Bridge?"
"Before Harbor Bridge existed."
"Did she know about the plan to fake your death?"
Evelyn looked down.
"Yes."
Rachel felt dread.
"Was she supposed to die?"
"No."
The answer came quickly.
"Absolutely not."
"Then what happened?"
"Claire was sick."
"With what?"
"An undiagnosed heart condition."
"She collapsed the night you were supposed to disappear."
"Yes."
Rachel stared.
"Convenient."
Evelyn looked hurt.
"It was horrifying."
"But you used it."
"Yes."
"Who changed the hospital records?"
"Nathan."
"Who switched identities?"
"A clerk he bribed."
"Who knew?"
"Four people."
"Names."
"Nathan. Me. Claire before she died. The clerk."
"And Richard Weller?"
"Not then."
Rachel paced.
"What did Claire get in return?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"Protection for her daughter."
Rachel stopped.
"She had a child?"
"Yes."
"You said no known family."
"The daughter had been placed with relatives under another name."
Rachel stared.
"Why did Claire need protection?"
"Because she had stolen records from Arthur Weller."
Rachel felt the pieces align.
"Where is the daughter?"
Evelyn looked toward the hallway.
Rachel followed her gaze.
A terrible thought formed.
"No."
Evelyn said nothing.
Rachel whispered, "Susan?"
"No."
"Me?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"Caleb's wife."
Rachel sat down.
"What?"
"Claire's daughter is Amanda Warren."
Caleb's wife.
The woman who had pushed him to help Rachel.
Rachel remembered Caleb saying his father had been cruel.
He had never mentioned Amanda's family.
"Does Amanda know?"
"No."
"Does Caleb?"
"I don't think so."
"Does Weller?"
"Apparently."
Rachel leaned back.
This secret did not directly threaten Emma.
But it revealed something larger.
The families surrounding Weller's network were not random.
Caleb.
Troy.
Rachel.
Amanda.
Each was connected to someone harmed by the original scheme.
Weller had kept descendants close.
Employees.
Contractors.
Spouses.
Targets.
Rachel felt sick.
"He surrounded himself with people whose parents knew things."
Evelyn nodded.
"Insurance."
"Control."
"Yes."
Rachel called Caleb.
He and Amanda arrived within an hour.
Amanda listened silently as Evelyn explained Claire.
When it ended, Amanda stared at the table.
"My mother didn't die in a car accident?"
"No," Evelyn said.
Amanda's voice shook.
"My aunt told me that all my life."
"She was protecting you."
Amanda laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps using that word."
Rachel understood.
Protection had become the excuse every adult used for deception.
Amanda looked at Evelyn.
"Where is my mother buried?"
Evelyn whispered, "In my grave."
Amanda began crying.
Caleb put an arm around her.
Rachel looked away.
The truth could heal.
It could also wound people who had survived because they did not know it.
Later, after Amanda and Caleb left, Rachel stood alone on Susan's porch.
Dean's truck appeared at the end of the driveway.
Rachel's body tightened.
He stopped near the gate.
He did not approach until she nodded.
Dean stood several feet away.
"I won't stay."
"Good."
He handed her an envelope.
"What's this?"
"Everything I have."
Rachel did not take it immediately.
"About what?"
"The loan. Weller. Nathan. The camera."
"Why now?"
"Because I am done lying."
Rachel looked at him.
"That would have meant something seven years ago."
"I know."
She took the envelope.
Inside was a signed statement.
Bank records.
Passwords.
Emails.
At the bottom was a notarized document surrendering any claim Dean believed he had to the house.
Rachel looked up.
"This doesn't fix anything."
"I know."
"It doesn't make what you did to Emma disappear."
"I know."
"It doesn't make us married again."
Dean's face tightened.
"I know."
Rachel felt no satisfaction hurting him.
Only exhaustion.
"Why did you treat her like that?"
Dean closed his eyes.
"I was angry at you."
"So you hurt her."
"I thought I was humiliating you."
"She is a person, Dean."
"I know."
"Stop saying that."
He nodded.
Rachel's voice became colder.
"You want to do one decent thing?"
"Anything."
"Tell Emma the truth."
Dean looked afraid.
"She's three."
"Then tell it in words a three-year-old understands."
Dean came inside.
Emma was awake.
When she saw him, she hid behind Rachel.
That broke something in Dean's face.
He knelt several feet away.
He did not approach.
"Emma."
She peeked around her mother's leg.
"Daddy did something mean."
Emma said nothing.
"I made fun of you when you were hungry."
Her eyes lowered.
"That was wrong."
Rachel watched carefully.
Dean continued.
"You were not bad."
Emma looked up.
"You were?"
Dean swallowed.
"Yes. Daddy was bad."
Emma thought for a moment.
"Mommy slapped you."
Rachel almost closed her eyes.
Dean gave a tiny sad smile.
"Yes."
"Because you were mean?"
"Yes."
Emma looked at Rachel.
Then back at Dean.
"You can't throw food."
"No."
"Food goes on plates."
Dean's voice broke.
"Yes."
Emma hugged Rachel's leg.
Dean stood.
He did not ask for forgiveness.
For once, he did not ask for anything.
At the door he turned.
"I'll cooperate with Morris."
Rachel nodded.
"Good."
He left.
That night Rachel opened his envelope.
Most of the documents confirmed what she already knew.
Then she found one email from Nathan to Dean dated eight years earlier.
Subject: Rachel is pregnant.
The message contained one sentence.
Whatever happens now, Emma must never be connected to the account.
Rachel stared at the screen.
Emma had not even been born.
Yet Nathan had already been afraid someone would connect her to Evelyn's hidden money.
Rachel scrolled down.
Dean's reply was shorter.
Why would anyone connect the baby?
Nathan answered.
Because the trust is in her name.
Rachel stopped breathing.
The stolen millions had not been placed in Rachel's name.
May you like
They had been placed in Emma's.
Before Emma was born.
