Chapter 12 - The River Warehouse)

Sunrise turned the river silver.
The warehouse stood beside an abandoned loading dock, its windows covered in grime.
Rachel went inside with Evelyn.
Dean remained outside despite protesting.
Detective Morris knew the location but had been ordered to wait unless Rachel signaled danger.
Troy Beck stood beneath a hanging industrial light.
He looked nothing like the laughing guest Rachel remembered.
He looked exhausted.
On a wooden crate beside him sat the red notebook.
Next to it was an old leather ledger.
Rachel stopped.
"Troy."
He raised both hands.
"I didn't hurt your daughter."
"You laughed."
His face changed.
"I know."
"You watched my husband throw food at her."
"I know."
"And you laughed."
"I needed Weller to believe I was with him."
Rachel stared.
"You could have found another way."
"Yes."
There was nothing he could say that made it acceptable.
Troy knew it.
"I am sorry."
Rachel looked at the notebook.
"Why take my things?"
"Because Marcus told me where Evelyn hid the code."
Evelyn frowned.
"How did Marcus know?"
"He overheard you tell Eleanor."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Another careless thread in a web of secrets.
Rachel said, "Where is Peter?"
Troy looked toward the back of the warehouse.
"Alive."
Rachel stared.
"You found your father?"
"Weller has kept him moving between properties."
"Why?"
"Because Dad knows where the rest of the money went."
Evelyn stepped forward.
"What money?"
Troy looked at the ledger.
"The original fund."
Evelyn went pale.
"What original fund?"
"Arthur Weller and Nathan created accounts to buy officials."
Rachel looked sharply at Evelyn.
"Nathan?"
Evelyn did not deny it.
Troy continued.
"When the network collapsed, millions remained."
"How many millions?"
"No idea. Dad believes twelve or fifteen."
Rachel stared.
"And the account code in my notebook accesses it?"
"Partly."
Evelyn shook her head.
"It cannot. Those accounts would be closed."
"Some were transferred."
"By whom?"
Troy looked at Rachel.
"Your mother."
Rachel turned.
Evelyn went still.
"You moved the money?"
Evelyn's face hardened.
"I moved what I could before disappearing."
"Where?"
"Trust accounts."
"For what?"
"Restitution."
Rachel almost laughed.
"You secretly controlled millions of stolen dollars?"
"Controlled is generous. I preserved evidence and assets."
"Did Nathan know?"
"No."
"Does Weller?"
"He suspected."
Troy said, "He knows now."
Rachel looked at him.
"How?"
"Because Dad told him."
"Why would Peter do that?"
"To stay alive."
That was difficult to condemn.
Rachel looked at the ledger.
"Where is Peter now?"
"Weller is bringing him here."
Rachel stiffened.
"What?"
Troy nodded.
"I offered the ledger."
"You invited Weller here?"
"I told him I'd trade everything for Dad."
Evelyn grabbed Troy's arm.
"That ledger can destroy him."
"I don't care."
"My father matters more."
Rachel understood completely.
She had traded the lockbox for Emma.
Troy was doing the same.
A vehicle approached outside.
Dean entered quickly.
"Three SUVs."
Rachel looked at Evelyn.
"That's not just Weller."
Troy picked up the ledger.
"No police."
Rachel said, "Police are already nearby."
Troy stared.
"You lied."
"I protected myself."
The warehouse doors opened.
Richard Weller entered with four men.
Peter Donnelly walked between them.
He was thinner than in the photographs Rachel had seen.
Older.
But alive.
Troy's face collapsed.
"Dad."
Peter looked at his son.
"Troy, don't."
Weller smiled.
"Family reunions everywhere."
His eyes moved to Evelyn.
Then Rachel.
"So many ghosts."
Rachel saw no weapon in Weller's hands.
That did not make him safe.
Troy lifted the ledger.
"Let him go."
Weller nodded.
One of the men pushed Peter forward.
Troy moved toward him.
Rachel watched Weller.
He was too calm.
"Wait," she said.
Troy stopped.
Weller looked amused.
Rachel pointed at Peter.
"Why is he being released so easily?"
Troy frowned.
"Rachel."
"No."
She looked at Peter.
"What did you tell him?"
Peter's face changed.
Troy whispered, "Dad?"
Peter closed his eyes.
"I am sorry."
Weller laughed.
Troy stepped backward.
"What did you do?"
Peter looked at his son.
"I gave him the account structure."
Troy stared.
"Why?"
"Because he would have killed me."
Weller extended his hand.
"The notebook."
Rachel moved in front of it.
"No."
Weller looked at her.
"The notebook has nothing to do with you."
"It has my handwriting."
"It contains numbers you copied as a child."
"They are still mine."
Evelyn whispered, "Rachel."
Rachel understood her warning.
Do not provoke him.
But the situation had changed.
For thirty years every person in Rachel's life had made decisions for her.
Evelyn disappeared for her.
Nathan watched her.
Dean married her under false pretenses.
Weller manipulated her property.
Now another group of men wanted to exchange documents surrounding her family while expecting her to remain silent.
Rachel was finished with silence.
"You took my daughter."
Weller's smile faded slightly.
"I did not personally."
"You ordered it."
"Prove that."
"The woman at the mill will."
"Perhaps."
"Marcus will."
Weller's eyes hardened.
"Marcus has always been weak."
"So was Dean."
Dean looked at her.
Rachel continued.
"So was Nathan. So was everyone who convinced themselves they had to obey you."
Weller stepped closer.
"And you think you're different?"
Rachel looked at her mother.
Then Dean.
Then Troy.
"Yes."
She pulled out her phone.
Weller's men moved.
Rachel pressed one button.
A loud alarm sounded outside.
Police vehicles surged toward the warehouse.
Weller turned.
Troy grabbed Peter.
Dean shoved one of Weller's men aside.
Chaos erupted.
Morris entered with officers.
Commands filled the warehouse.
Nobody fired.
Within seconds Weller was on the ground in handcuffs.
Troy held his father.
Evelyn clutched the red notebook.
Rachel stood in the center of everything, shaking.
Weller looked up at her.
"You think this ends because I am arrested?"
Rachel approached.
"No."
He smiled.
"Good."
Rachel frowned.
Weller lowered his voice.
"Ask your mother what happened to Claire Bannon."
Rachel looked at Evelyn.
Her mother's face went completely white.
Weller laughed as officers pulled him away.
May you like
And Rachel understood that even in defeat, Richard Weller still possessed one weapon.
Secrets.
