Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 - THE FOOTAGE REVEALED SOMETHING WORSEThe first recording confirmed the affair and the stolen money.

The second confirmed the threats. The third changed everything. It was recorded six nights before Emily received Claire’s note.Michael entered Margaret’s room at 1:12 a.m. wearing gloves. He opened the bedside cabinet, removed one medication bottle, and replaced it with another. The camera could not clearly capture the labels. But the next morning, Margaret suffered a dangerous drop in blood pressure.Luis paused the footage.“Did the medical team know he accessed her medication?”Claire shook her head.“Family members are not permitted to handle it.”Emily felt sick.“He caused her emergency?”“We can’t make that conclusion without laboratory testing,” Claire said carefully. “But the footage must be investigated.”The recording continued.Michael placed the original bottle in his pocket. Then he removed a sheet of paper from his briefcase and practiced Margaret’s signature. On a later video, he photographed insurance documents.Emily recognized the policy. She had helped Margaret update it two years earlier.Michael was not the main beneficiary.A charitable foundation and two of Margaret’s nieces were supposed to receive most of the money. Michael received a smaller portion because Margaret had already financed his education and business. The revised document on-screen named Michael as the sole beneficiary.“He forged it,” Emily whispered.Luis played another clip.Michael stood in the hallway speaking to someone by phone. The audio was faint, but the recording software enhanced it.“The heart condition makes it believable,” Michael said. “After the next incident, they’ll classify her as incapable. I’ll control the trust before Emily knows it exists.”Emily covered her mouth. The hospital compliance officer contacted the police.Margaret was immediately moved to a protected room under a restricted visitor list. Her medications were collected for testing, and a physician evaluated her ability to make decisions. She was alert, informed, and fully capable.Michael’s claims of severe confusion had been exaggerated. At the same time, Luis discovered that someone had used Michael’s credentials to alter Margaret’s contact information, remove Emily from automatic updates, and approve a transfer request to a private facility. The facility was nearly three hours away.It specialized in long-term patients with limited visitors. The transfer was scheduled for the next morning.Emily understood what Michael intended. He wanted Margaret isolated before anyone could stop him.Security officers approached Michael in the lobby and asked him to remain while police arrived. He tried to laugh.“There must be some misunderstanding.”Then he saw Emily above him.The footage played behind her.His smile vanished.Michael turned toward the exit. The doors locked automatically. He demanded to speak with the hospital director. He threatened lawsuits, careers, and reputations. He claimed the recordings were taken out of context. When the police arrived, he changed strategies.“My mother is confused,” he insisted. “My wife is emotional. That nurse has been interfering with our family.”Detective Naomi Brooks listened without reacting. Then she showed him a still image of the switched medication bottles.Michael stopped speaking.Serena was located at the condominium sales office with the envelope in her handbag.Inside were $40,000 in cashier’s checks purchased from accounts belonging to Emily and Margaret.Michael was arrested.Serena was detained for questioning. As officers led Michael away, he looked at Emily.“You’re destroying our family.”Emily met his eyes.“No, Michael. I’m finally seeing what you did to it.”
