Emily was gone.Margaret stared silently at the wall.Michael smiled at Claire.“My wife stopped by, apparently. I wish someone had called me.”“Emily is allowed to visit.”“Not if visits upset the patient.”“She seemed comforted by Emily’s presence.”Michael picked up his briefcase.“My mother’s condition changes quickly. I know her better than the staff.”Claire looked at the emergency call button.It was plugged in, but the cable had been wrapped tightly around the bed rail, placing it beyond Margaret’s reach.Claire unwrapped it.Michael watched her.“You appear unusually interested in my family.”“I’m interested in my patient’s safety.”“My mother may be transferred soon.”“Any transfer will require medical approval.”“I’m sure the right people will agree.”After he left, Claire asked Margaret what happened.“He knows I told Emily about the trust.”“Did he threaten you?”Margaret closed her eyes.“He said Emily would never believe what kind of man he was.”Claire thought of the new cameras.The security system automatically stored footage for thirty days. Access required authorization, but a patient-safety investigation could justify review.She contacted her supervisor again.This time, Claire included allegations of financial exploitation, intimidation, equipment interference, and possible medical neglect.The hospital’s compliance officer approved an urgent footage review.Luis Ramirez began checking the recordings.At 4:40 p.m., he called Claire.“You need to see this.”The footage showed Michael entering Margaret’s room on three separate nights after visiting hours. On one occasion, he switched two medication bottles in the bedside cabinet. On another, he removed the call button. A third recording captured him photographing Margaret’s signature from an old consent form.Luis immediately preserved the files.“We need to inform the medical team and law enforcement,” he said.Claire agreed, but she feared Michael might move Margaret before action could be taken.The following morning, she saw Emily in the main corridor.Michael was speaking with a physician less than twenty feet away.Claire could not risk a conversation.She walked past Emily, dropped a folded note near her hand, and whispered without stopping.“Your husband is lying. Go to Room 120—and prepare yourself.”Emily entered Margaret’s room and found the bed empty.For a horrifying moment, she thought Michael had already moved her.Then Margaret emerged from the bathroom with a physical therapist.Emily nearly cried with relief.Claire entered moments later and quietly explained that the hospital had preserved surveillance footage.“Michael doesn’t know we found it,” she said. “Security is preparing a private room.”Emily looked through the glass and saw her husband speaking on the phone.He appeared calm.“What exactly is on the recording?”Claire’s expression answered before she spoke.“More than any of us expected.”They escorted Emily to the security office.Luis locked the door.Then he pressed play.
