Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 - THE HUSBAND EVERYONE TRUSTEDThree weeks earlier, Emily believed she had a good marriage.

Not a perfect one. She had stopped believing in perfection years ago. But she believed Michael was loyal, hardworking, and devoted to his family. They had met when Emily was twenty-six and working as a financial analyst for a healthcare company in Chicago. Michael had been charming without appearing arrogant. He remembered the names of waiters, carried groceries for elderly neighbors, and called his mother every Sunday evening. When he proposed after eighteen months, Margaret Carter welcomed Emily with tears.“You’re the best thing that ever happened to him,” she said.Emily had eventually learned that Margaret raised Michael alone after his father disappeared. She worked two jobs, paid for his education, and sold her small jewelry collection when he wanted to start a consulting company.Michael often spoke of that sacrifice.“I’ll take care of her one day,” he promised. For the first several years, he seemed to keep that promise. He repaired Margaret’s roof, paid her property taxes when she was short on money, and visited every holiday. He was attentive, patient, and protective. At least, that was what Emily saw.The changes began after Michael’s consulting company lost two major clients. He started staying late at the office and became defensive whenever Emily asked about the business. He insisted that the company was going through a temporary problem, but he refused to show her the accounts.“We agreed to keep our careers separate,” he reminded her.Their careers had been separate.Their finances had not.Emily earned considerably more than Michael, but she never used that fact against him. They shared a household account and maintained individual savings. When he needed help covering company expenses, she transferred money without hesitation.“We’re a team,” she told him.Michael kissed her forehead.“You’re saving everything I built.”At the time, the sentence sounded grateful.Later, Emily realized he had said “everything I built,” not “everything we built.”Then Margaret became ill.A neighbor found her unconscious in her kitchen after she missed a church meeting. At the hospital, doctors discovered a heart condition complicated by dangerously inconsistent medication levels.Michael appeared devastated. He sat beside his mother’s bed and held her hand while doctors explained that she would need monitoring, rehabilitation, and possibly a medical procedure.Emily watched him cry in the hallway.“I should have checked on her more often,” he said.“You couldn’t have known,” Emily comforted him.“I’m her only son. It’s my responsibility.”Michael said Margaret’s insurance would not cover all the expenses. He showed Emily an estimate on his phone and asked whether they could use part of their emergency savings.Emily did not hesitate.“Whatever she needs.”He hugged her tightly.“Thank you.”During the next two weeks, Michael handled every financial conversation with the hospital. He said he did not want Emily burdened with paperwork while managing an important project at work. Each evening, he gave her updates. The cardiologist was encouraged.Margaret’s medications were being adjusted.A private nurse had been assigned.Everything sounded reasonable. But whenever Emily visited, Margaret seemed more frightened than ill.She rarely spoke when Michael was in the room. And every time he touched her shoulder, she flinched.Emily noticed. She simply did not yet understand why.
