Chapter 15 - The Letter Delivered Five Years Late

The package had no return address.

The courier claimed it had been released by a legal storage company following Malcolm Reed’s arrest. The delivery instructions had been written five years earlier.

Connor carried it into the study.

Amy followed with Frederick.

Elena joined them through a video call.

“Do not open anything until it has been scanned,” she said.

A security team examined the package and found no dangerous device or substance.

Connor cut the paper carefully.

Inside was a wooden box bearing the Hale family emblem.

The same emblem appeared on Malcolm’s cuff link.

The box contained three items.

A photograph.

A letter.

And a birth certificate.

Connor picked up the photograph first.

It showed Richard standing in front of the winter room with three young men.

One was Malcolm.

One was Dr. Voss.

The third looked almost exactly like Connor.

Not Nathan.

Connor.

The photograph had been taken thirty-four years earlier, before Connor was born.

Amy looked over his shoulder.

“Who is that?”

Connor turned the photograph over.

Richard had written four names.

Richard Hale.

Malcolm Reed.

Simon Voss.

Jonathan Hale.

Connor stared at the final name.

He had never heard of Jonathan.

He opened the letter.

My sons,

If Malcolm has been arrested, then the first danger has passed. Do not mistake that for safety.

Malcolm did not create the plan. He inherited it.

The Hale property was protected because someone beneath the company believed the land concealed more than access rights. I spent years trying to discover what they were searching for.

I failed.

Jonathan did not.

Connor stopped reading.

Amy touched his shoulder.

“Keep going.”

Connor continued.

You were told that I had no surviving brother. That was necessary.

Jonathan disappeared after discovering that our grandfather used the estate to conceal records from a private organization known as Meridian.

Malcolm believed Meridian was only a financial network.

He was wrong.

The trust, the house, and the company were designed to keep Meridian from finding what lies beneath the eastern foundation.

Do not excavate it.

Do not trust anyone who asks about the original blueprint.

And if a man arrives claiming to be Jonathan, remember this:

My brother died before Connor was born.

Connor lowered the letter.

The room was silent.

Amy looked at the photograph again.

“Then who was this man?”

Connor opened the birth certificate.

The name of the child was Connor Richard Hale.

The date of birth matched his.

The mother’s name was blank.

The father’s name was not Richard Hale.

It was Jonathan Hale.

Connor felt the floor shift beneath him.

“That has to be false.”

Elena’s voice came through the laptop.

“Check the seal.”

Connor examined it.

The document carried an official state registration mark.

A second page was folded behind it.

It contained a DNA laboratory report completed five years earlier.

Richard Hale was excluded as Connor’s biological father.

Jonathan Hale could not be excluded.

Amy sat beside Connor.

“Richard raised you.”

“He was my father.”

“I know.”

Connor looked again at the warning.

My brother died before Connor was born.

Someone had lied.

Either the birth certificate was false, the DNA report was false, or Richard had spent Connor’s entire life hiding the identity of his real father.

Frederick reached toward the wooden box.

His fingers touched the bottom panel.

A quiet click sounded.

The panel lifted.

Inside was a small metal object wrapped in black cloth.

Connor unfolded it.

A key card.

The words MERIDIAN FOUNDATION appeared across the surface.

Beneath them was a recent access date.

Three days earlier.

The same day as Teresa’s party.

Amy looked toward the study door.

“Someone used it while everyone was here.”

Connor turned the card over.

A location was printed on the back.

EAST FOUNDATION ACCESS.

The house trembled.

At first, Connor thought it was a truck passing outside.

Then the bookshelves rattled.

A deep mechanical sound rose from beneath the floor.

One of the security monitors activated by itself.

The screen displayed an underground corridor Connor had never seen.

Concrete walls stretched into darkness.

At the far end stood a steel door marked with the Meridian emblem.

A man waited beside it.

He had Connor’s face.

Not Nathan’s younger features.

Not Richard’s familiar expression.

Connor’s exact face as it might look twenty years older.

The man stared into the underground camera and raised a phone.

Connor’s phone rang.

Amy took Frederick into her arms.

Connor answered without speaking.

The man on the monitor smiled.

“Hello, son.”

Connor’s blood turned cold.

“You are not Jonathan.”

The man’s smile widened.

“No,” he replied. “Jonathan was the name your father used after he stole mine.”

Behind him, the steel door began to open.

A second figure appeared in the darkness.

Someone Connor recognized instantly.

Someone who was supposed to be in federal custody.

Dr. Simon Voss stepped into view holding a medical case.

The older man continued.

“Malcolm was never the head of Meridian. He was only the man guarding the entrance.”

Connor looked at the floor beneath his feet.

The mechanical sound grew louder.

“What is under my house?”

The man on the screen moved closer to the opening door.

“Not what,” he said.

“Who.”

The monitor went black.

At the same moment, every lock in the house clicked open.

And from beneath the eastern foundation came three slow knocks.
