Chapter 14 - The Man at the Head of the Table

Malcolm did not run.
He arrived at Connor’s house the following morning in a black sedan and walked through the front gate with his attorney.
He was sixty-two, silver-haired, elegant, and calm.
Connor had known him all his life.
That familiarity made the betrayal feel unreal.
Malcolm entered the study and looked at Richard’s recorder on the desk.
“You found it.”
Connor stood opposite him.
“You ordered Dylan to steal the house.”
“I ordered him to secure company assets.”
“My home is not a company asset.”
“The land beneath it is.”
“It belongs to the trust.”
Malcolm smiled faintly. “A trust created through theft.”
Elena sat beside two federal investigators.
“Choose your words carefully,” she warned.
Malcolm ignored her.
He opened a leather folder and placed an old partnership agreement on the desk.
Richard Hale and Malcolm Reed had founded the earliest version of Hale Construction together.
Each owned half.
According to Malcolm, Richard later used false accusations of financial misconduct to force him into a minority position.
Connor reviewed the document.
“My father bought your shares.”
“After destroying my reputation.”
“So you poisoned him?”
Malcolm’s expression remained composed.
“Simon treated him.”
“With drugs you approved.”
“Richard was ill.”
“You made him ill.”
Malcolm leaned back.
“Prove it.”
Connor played the winter room recording.
Malcolm listened without reaction.
The unknown voice had been digitally compared to him, but the result was inconclusive because of distortion.
The cuff link placed him in the conservatory, but Malcolm claimed he had lost it years earlier.
The investigators possessed evidence of fraud against Teresa, Dylan, Nathan, and Dr. Voss.
They had motive and suspicion against Malcolm.
They did not yet have proof.
Connor placed the bank key on the desk.
Malcolm’s eyes moved toward it.
There.
A single involuntary glance.
Connor saw it.
“You know what is in the deposit box,” he said.
Malcolm smiled. “So did your father.”
Nathan joined the meeting through a secure video connection.
Connor held up the coded location.
“Can you solve the second half?”
Nathan studied it.
Their father had used two different childhood ciphers because Connor and Nathan had always competed rather than cooperate.
Separately, the code meant nothing.
Together, it revealed the bank, branch, and box number.
Malcolm’s confidence faded.
“You have no legal authority to open it,” he said.
Elena placed Richard’s letter beside the key.
“Connor and Nathan are named jointly.”
The bank opened the box under federal supervision.
Inside were financial ledgers, medical test results, and an original recording from the winter meeting.
Unlike the damaged copy beneath the floor, the bank recording continued after Richard refused to sign.
Malcolm’s voice was clear.
“If you will not transfer the rights, Simon will make sure you cannot manage them.”
Teresa answered.
“You said he would only appear confused.”
Malcolm replied, “Confusion is enough. Once Connor inherits, we repeat the process.”
Richard shouted.
“You will not touch my sons.”
Malcolm laughed.
“Then perhaps one of them will help us.”
The recording ended with a struggle.
The evidence was enough.
Malcolm was arrested for conspiracy, fraud, unlawful medical manipulation, and his role in Richard’s death. Dr. Voss was found hiding in a private clinic under a false name. Dylan entered a cooperation agreement. Nathan accepted responsibility for identity theft and forgery.
Teresa was charged as well.
Before officers took her away, Connor met her at the courthouse.
She looked at him through the glass partition.
“I thought I could control it,” she said.
“You chose it.”
“I wanted to secure the family’s future.”
“You risked my son’s health.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never meant for Frederick to be hurt.”
Connor felt no comfort in the words.
“You meant for him to remain sick because it made Amy easier to control.”
Teresa lowered her head.
Connor stood.
“You taught me that family should be protected.”
She looked up hopefully.
Connor continued.
“So I am protecting mine from you.”
He left without turning back.
Weeks later, the fraudulent property transfer was voided. Northstar’s assets were frozen. The hidden trust remained under Connor and Nathan’s joint protection, preventing any sale without independent review.
Connor resigned from several daily responsibilities at Hale Construction so he could spend more time with Amy and Frederick.
The pink cake stain remained faintly visible between two kitchen tiles.
Amy wanted to replace them.
Connor asked her not to.
“It reminds me,” he said.
“Of what?”
“That a beautiful celebration can hide an ugly message.”
Amy looked toward Frederick, who was laughing in his high chair.
“And that messages can be uncovered.”
Connor placed his arm around her.
For the first time in months, the house felt like theirs again.
May you like
Then the doorbell rang.
A courier stood outside holding a package addressed in Richard Hale’s handwriting.
