Chapter 11 - The Doctor’s Empty House
Connor was taken to the hospital for testing.
The doctors found traces of a sedative compound not listed on the supplement label. The amount in his blood was not immediately life-threatening, but repeated exposure explained his recent headaches, fatigue, and occasional gaps in concentration.
The conspiracy had created its own evidence.
They drugged him, then used the symptoms to justify declaring him incompetent.
Frederick’s infection improved after receiving the correct medicine.
Amy remained at the hospital with both Connor and the baby while Elena coordinated with investigators.
Nathan agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration during prosecution. He provided the flash drive and described every task Dylan had assigned.
But he still could not identify the man giving orders.
Dr. Simon Voss became the next priority.
His house stood empty.
His car remained in the garage.
His passport had not been used.
Investigators found signs that he had left quickly: food in the refrigerator, an open suitcase, and a coffee cup beside his computer.
In the home office, they discovered shredded medical files.
One partially reconstructed page contained Connor’s name.
Another contained Frederick’s.
The third listed Richard Hale.
Connor’s father.
Richard had died five years earlier after a rapid neurological illness.
For months before his death, he had suffered confusion, weakness, and memory problems.
Doctors believed it was an aggressive degenerative condition.
Dr. Voss had treated him.
Connor stared at the reconstructed page in Elena’s office.
“This began before the house transfer.”
Elena nodded.
“Possibly years before.”
Amy held Connor’s hand.
“Your father changed his will during his illness.”
Connor looked at her.
He had not considered that.
Richard’s final will gave Connor the house and control of Hale Construction. Teresa often complained that the distribution was unfair.
What if an earlier will had existed?
What if someone had drugged Richard to influence a later version?
Elena obtained court permission to review the estate records.
The original filing contained a sealed amendment.
It had never been read aloud to the family because Richard’s attorney claimed it concerned a private business matter.
Connor broke the seal in the presence of investigators.
The amendment stated that the Hale property could not be sold for twenty-five years.
It also established a hidden trust holding mineral and water rights beneath the twelve-acre estate.
The rights were worth far more than the house.
A regional infrastructure company had recently proposed a major underground transit project. Control of the subsurface rights could be worth tens of millions of dollars.
Northstar did not want the house for housing development.
That was a cover.
Someone wanted what lay beneath it.
Richard’s amendment included a final warning.
If any person attempted to obtain the property through coercion, fraud, or the incapacity of an heir, ownership would automatically transfer to the Hale Legacy Trust.
The trustee’s name had been redacted from the public copy.
Only the original attorney knew who controlled it.
Connor looked at Elena.
“Who was my father’s attorney?”
She checked the file.
“Graham Bell.”
Connor recognized the name.
Graham had disappeared shortly after Richard’s funeral.
His car was found near a river.
His body was never recovered.
Amy turned to the final page.
A handwritten note appeared beneath Richard’s signature.
Graham knows what Simon did. Trust no one who attended the winter meeting.
Connor felt the room grow colder.
“What winter meeting?”
Elena searched the estate calendar from the year before Richard’s death.
One private gathering had taken place at the house.
The guest list included Dr. Voss, Graham Bell, Teresa, Dylan’s father, and three senior executives from Hale Construction.
The sixth name had been removed.
Only an indentation remained on the paper.
