Chapter 10 - The Confession Amy Refused to Accept

Teresa arrived at Connor’s gate shortly after sunrise.

She came alone.

Connor watched through the camera while Nathan remained hidden in the guesthouse. Elena had contacted federal investigators because the fraud crossed state lines and involved insurance manipulation, identity theft, and corporate conspiracy.

The investigators wanted Teresa talking.

Connor opened the gate remotely.

Amy stood beside him in the foyer.

“You should stay upstairs,” he said.

“No.”

“She may attack you.”

“She already did.”

Connor looked at her.

Amy’s exhaustion remained, but fear had been replaced by determination.

Teresa entered carrying a folder.

She looked older than she had the day before.

Connor did not invite her to sit.

“Where is Nathan?” she asked.

“You tell me.”

Teresa studied his face.

“He contacted you.”

Connor said nothing.

She placed the folder on the table.

“I acted alone.”

Amy almost laughed.

Teresa continued.

“I was angry that you rejected the development offers. I believed selling the property was best for the family.”

“You forged a medical declaration,” Connor said.

“Yes.”

“You activated life insurance.”

“Yes.”

“You diluted Frederick’s medicine.”

Teresa’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

Connor’s hands curled into fists.

Amy stepped between them before he could move.

“Why?” Amy asked.

“I needed you distracted.”

“He was sick.”

“I did not give him anything dangerous.”

“You weakened the medicine his doctor prescribed.”

“I knew the fever would remain manageable.”

“You knew nothing.”

Teresa lowered her eyes.

Amy moved closer.

“You stood beside his crib at night. You watched me sleep. You called my baby a weakness.”

“I was trying to protect Connor’s future.”

“You were trying to control it.”

Teresa opened the folder.

Inside were copies of Amy’s counseling records.

Connor’s expression hardened.

Teresa pushed them toward him.

“The people involved want me to use these against Amy.”

Connor did not touch them.

“They said I should claim she created the documents during a psychological episode.”

Amy stared at the pages.

The records contained private details about her fear after Frederick’s birth, her sleeplessness, and her guilt over not recognizing his early labor symptoms.

“How did you get these?” she asked.

“I didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

“Dylan gave them to me.”

Amy turned one page.

A clinic access log was attached.

The records had been viewed by someone using the account of Dr. Rachel Voss.

Dr. Simon Voss’s daughter.

Amy had never met her.

Connor photographed the access log and sent it to Elena.

“Who is above Dylan?” he asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I only heard his voice.”

“Did he order the life insurance?”

“Yes.”

“Did he order Frederick’s medicine changed?”

Teresa hesitated.

“No.”

Amy looked at her.

“That was my decision,” Teresa admitted. “They told me to keep you occupied. I chose how.”

Connor turned away as though he could no longer look at her.

Teresa reached toward him.

“Connor.”

He stepped back.

“You are not my mother in this house.”

The words struck her.

She closed the folder.

“There is something else.”

Connor waited.

“The insurance policy was not supposed to pay because of your death.”

Elena, listening through Connor’s phone, spoke through the speaker.

“Then what triggers it?”

Teresa looked toward the windows.

“Permanent incapacity.”

Connor’s eyes narrowed.

“What were they planning?”

“I don’t know exactly. Dr. Voss gave Dylan medication.”

“What kind?”

Teresa swallowed.

“Something that could cause confusion, weakness, and memory loss if taken repeatedly.”

Connor remembered the supplements Dr. Voss had recommended six weeks earlier.

He had taken one every morning.

Amy ran upstairs.

She returned carrying the bottle.

May you like

Teresa’s face confirmed the truth before anyone spoke.

Connor had already taken that day’s dose.
