Chapter 9 - The Suitcase Opens

The tunnel exited almost a quarter mile from Blackwater near an abandoned service road.

Maya and Chloe waited beside a drainage ditch.

Chloe ran toward Clara.

Clara lifted her.

Behind them smoke rose through Blackwater’s broken windows.

Dean did not emerge.

Richard stopped near the tunnel entrance.

"He’s not coming."

Elena stared back.

"We don’t know that."

Richard looked at her.

"You always did that."

"What?"

"Refused to believe people were gone."

Elena’s expression hardened.

"Maybe because this family kept declaring living people dead."

Maya interrupted.

"We need to move."

They had one vehicle.

Maya’s.

Richard approached.

Elena pointed the gun again.

"You’re not coming."

"If Simon finds Clara before we understand the trust, Chloe becomes the only target left."

Clara looked at him.

"Target for what?"

"Control."

"Explain."

Richard spoke quickly.

"Gerald believed the Collins trust would eventually become useless because Clara’s identity had been erased. Then five years ago Simon discovered Rebecca had registered a sealed beneficiary amendment through a bank in Switzerland."

"Why Switzerland?"

"Because Gerald couldn’t reach it."

Richard looked at Chloe.

"The amendment transfers voting control over thirty-one percent of Vance Meridian to Rebecca’s surviving female bloodline."

Clara stared.

"Thirty-one percent?"

"Combined with other trust assets, it’s enough to remove the Vale-controlled board."

Maya understood.

"So Simon wants Chloe."

"Or wants Chloe declared someone else’s child."

Clara thought of the forged adoption file.

"Then he could install a guardian."

Richard nodded.

"A guardian he controls."

Elena stared at her brother.

"How long have you known?"

"Seven months."

"The exact time you started moving money."

Richard looked at Dean’s abandoned direction.

"Yes."

Clara’s anger sharpened.

"You could have told me."

"I couldn’t trust you."

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the woods.

Chloe jumped.

Clara immediately regretted doing it in front of her.

But not enough to apologize.

"You couldn’t trust me?"

Richard touched his cheek.

"I thought you were working with Elena."

"I didn’t know she was alive."

"I know that now."

"You created fake medical records."

Richard’s face changed.

"No."

Clara stared.

"Don’t lie."

"I knew Simon had medical access. I didn’t know he built a psychiatric file."

"You told airport staff I stopped taking medication."

Richard looked ashamed.

"Simon texted me the instruction."

"And you followed it."

"Yes."

"Because you thought humiliating me was safer than telling me the truth?"

"Because Peter Vale has killed people."

Elena lowered the gun slightly.

"He’s right."

Clara turned on her.

"So everyone gets excuses except me?"

"No."

Elena’s voice softened.

"You deserved the truth."

"Then give it to me now."

Maya’s phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Her face went pale.

"What?"

Maya turned the screen.

A photograph.

The charcoal suitcase.

Open.

Inside were files, several drives and a carved wooden bird.

The photograph had been sent from Chloe’s old tablet account.

Clara looked at Chloe.

"Sweetheart?"

"I don’t have my tablet."

Richard immediately spoke.

"Where is it?"

"At home."

Maya checked metadata.

"The image was uploaded four minutes ago."

Someone was inside Clara and Richard’s house.

Then another image arrived.

The suitcase again.

This time empty.

A message followed.

THANK YOU FOR FINDING IT FOR US.

Richard swore.

Maya stared at Chloe.

"How did the suitcase get back to your house?"

Chloe looked confused.

"It didn’t."

"You gave it to me."

"Yes."

"Then I gave it to Elena."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Everyone turned.

Maya stared.

"What?"

"You gave me a suitcase."

Elena’s voice became slow.

"But I never opened it."

"Why not?"

"I was followed immediately."

Richard understood first.

"Decoy."

Elena looked at Chloe.

"The original never left the house."

Chloe hesitated.

Then nodded.

"I switched them."

Clara stared.

"You what?"

"There were two gray suitcases."

Richard closed his eyes.

Of course.

He traveled constantly.

Their storage room contained multiple identical luggage sets.

Chloe continued.

"Daddy’s one was heavy. I couldn’t drag it. So I took everything out and put it in the other one."

Clara crouched.

"Where did you put Daddy’s things?"

Chloe pointed vaguely.

"In my secret place."

Richard’s eyes widened.

"Where?"

Chloe immediately hid behind Clara.

Richard softened his voice.

"Chloe."

"No."

"Sweetheart, those things are dangerous."

"You’re dangerous."

Richard went silent.

The child’s words hit harder than Clara’s slap.

Clara stroked Chloe’s hair.

"Where is your secret place?"

Chloe whispered in her ear.

Clara stared.

Richard stepped closer.

"What?"

Clara almost smiled.

Their house contained a small miniature playhouse in Chloe’s bedroom.

A custom-built dollhouse modeled after the Vance mansion.

Gerald had commissioned it before he died.

Inside was a hidden storage cavity behind the tiny staircase.

Chloe had discovered it years ago.

Richard never knew.

Under the stairs.

The seventh note.

Not Blackwater.

Their house.

Clara looked at Elena.

"The note wasn’t about this blue house."

Elena understood.

"It was about the dollhouse."

Chloe nodded.

"The bird is there."

Richard pulled out his phone.

"We need to reach it before Simon."

Maya shook her head.

"Simon is already inside your house."

Richard looked at Clara.

"Then we call the police."

Elena laughed once.

"Which police?"

Richard stopped.

Elena looked at Clara.

"Seventeen years ago, Gerald owned the detective who signed my death report."

"Is he still working?"

"No."

"Who replaced him?"

May you like

Elena looked at Richard.

"His son."
