Chapter 10 - The Man Who Came Back From the Dead

They did not go to the police.

They went to a federal field office.

Not because Clara trusted institutions completely.

Because Maya had one contact there who had spent two years investigating Vance Meridian freight irregularities.

Special Agent Aaron Bell.

He met them in an underground parking structure.

The moment he saw Richard, he reached for handcuffs.

Maya stopped him.

"Not yet."

Bell stared at Richard.

"You’re asking a lot."

Richard held up both hands.

"I can give you Peter Vale."

Bell’s expression changed.

"Peter Vale is dead."

"No."

"You have evidence?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Richard looked at Chloe.

"In a dollhouse."

Bell stared.

"This is not how I expected my afternoon to go."

They entered the federal building through a secured service entrance.

Clara and Chloe were placed in a private interview room.

Richard, Elena and Maya were separated.

For the first time since the airport, Clara had several minutes alone with her daughter.

Chloe curled beside her on a small couch.

"Is Daddy going to jail?"

"I don’t know."

"Are you?"

Clara looked at her.

"No."

"Promise?"

Clara hesitated.

Richard had told Chloe that Clara would go to jail.

He had weaponized the child’s deepest fear.

Clara took both her hands.

"I promise I will fight with everything I have to stay with you."

Chloe leaned against her.

"That’s not the same."

"No."

Clara kissed the top of her head.

"But it’s the truth."

Chloe thought about that.

Then nodded.

"I like the truth better."

Clara almost cried.

An hour later, Agent Bell returned.

"We have a problem."

Clara stood.

"What?"

"Your house is empty."

"Simon?"

"Gone."

"The suitcase?"

"We haven’t found the hidden compartment yet."

Chloe gave them precise instructions.

Agents entered the playroom remotely while Bell showed the camera feed.

The dollhouse stood against the far wall.

An agent removed the miniature staircase.

Behind it was a compartment.

Inside sat a carved wooden bird.

No files.

No drives.

No papers.

Only the bird.

Richard watched from another room through video.

Elena whispered.

"He found it."

The agent lifted the bird.

Something rattled inside.

"Wait," Elena said.

The bird opened along a seam.

Inside was a tiny storage device.

Maya smiled for the first time.

"Gerald never trusted one hiding place."

The drive was transported to a forensic lab.

It contained seventy-eight encrypted files.

Richard provided one password.

Failed.

Elena provided another.

Failed.

Maya tried their mother’s birth date.

Failed.

Clara watched.

Then Chloe said, "Try Bluebird."

Everyone turned.

"Why?"

"Grandpa used to call me that."

Clara frowned.

Gerald died when Chloe was an infant.

"He called you that?"

Chloe nodded.

"When I was a baby."

"You remember?"

"No."

"Daddy told me."

Richard looked confused.

"I never told you that."

Chloe stared at him.

"Yes, you did."

"No."

Clara felt uneasy.

"When?"

Chloe thought.

"In the red room."

Maya went still.

"What red room?"

"The doctor place."

Clara’s stomach dropped.

Harrington Institute.

Chloe had gone there twice for pediatric testing.

Richard said it was routine.

"What happened in the red room?"

"A lady asked me questions."

"What questions?"

"About Grandpa. About birds. About Mommy."

Clara looked at Bell.

He was already writing.

"Try Bluebird," he told the technician.

The drive unlocked.

Inside were recordings.

Hundreds of pages.

Financial records.

Transport manifests.

Medical payments.

Police bribes.

And video.

One file was dated seventeen years earlier.

Elena stared at it.

"No."

Richard looked at her.

"What?"

"That’s the night."

Bell opened it.

Security footage appeared.

Blackwater.

The underground room.

Gerald Vance entered.

Then Rebecca Collins.

Clara leaned closer.

Her biological mother.

Alive.

Terrified.

A younger Elena followed.

Then a third man.

Peter Vale.

Young but unmistakable.

The audio was poor.

Gerald shouted.

Rebecca shouted back.

Peter grabbed her.

Elena tried to intervene.

Then a fourth person entered.

Jonathan Collins.

Clara’s father.

A fight.

Gerald fell.

Jonathan ran toward Rebecca.

Peter pulled a gun.

The screen flashed.

Rebecca collapsed.

Clara covered her mouth.

Another shot.

Jonathan fell.

Elena screamed.

Richard looked away.

Peter stood over the bodies.

Gerald rose slowly.

He looked at Elena.

Then toward the camera.

And said clearly:

"Richard never sees this."

The video ended.

Clara stared at Richard.

He looked shattered.

"My father told me Elena killed them."

Elena laughed through tears.

"And he told me you chose the money."

"I did."

Richard looked at her.

"After he showed me photographs of you standing over their bodies."

Elena closed her eyes.

Gerald had divided his children with lies.

Peter Vale had killed Clara’s parents.

Gerald had covered it up.

And Simon had inherited the machinery.

Bell began organizing warrants.

Then another file drew the technician’s attention.

It was dated only nine months earlier.

Video.

Harrington Institute.

A room painted red.

Chloe sat in a chair.

She was five.

Across from her sat an elderly man wearing a medical coat.

He leaned forward and said:

"Bluebird, tell me what your grandfather taught you."

Chloe answered.

"He said Mommy must never know about the box."

Clara stopped breathing.

The man removed his glasses.

Richard whispered.

"Peter."

May you like

Peter Vale.

Alive.
