Chapter 8 - Richard's Confession

The first gunshot hit concrete.

Chloe screamed.

Clara pulled her down.

Another shot.

Dean fired toward the staircase.

Maya dragged Chloe behind a filing cabinet.

Elena moved through the darkness with the confidence of someone who had expected an ambush.

"Back exit," she whispered.

"Where?"

"Third room."

They moved quickly.

Dean remained behind them.

Footsteps descended the stairs.

Multiple people.

Clara heard a man shout.

"Elena!"

Richard.

Clara stopped.

Elena grabbed her arm.

"Move."

"Richard is here."

"Exactly."

They reached the second room.

Elena opened a concealed panel behind the shelves.

A narrow tunnel stretched beyond.

Maya entered with Chloe.

Clara started after them.

Then Richard shouted again.

"Clara, Simon has Chloe’s adoption file!"

She froze.

Elena cursed.

"He’s baiting you."

Clara knew.

But something in the wording mattered.

Adoption file.

Not birth file.

Not identity file.

Adoption.

"Go," Elena said.

"Take Chloe."

Maya shook her head.

"Clara."

"Take her."

Chloe began crying.

"Mommy, no."

Clara hugged her.

"I’m right behind you."

It was a lie.

Chloe knew.

"Please."

Clara kissed her forehead.

"Go with Aunt Maya."

The word Aunt surprised all of them.

Maya took Chloe.

Elena stayed.

"I’m not leaving you."

Clara nodded.

They returned toward the main corridor.

Dean crouched near the wall.

Richard stood at the far end with both hands visible.

He appeared alone.

"Where is Simon?" Clara asked.

Richard looked at Elena.

For the first time in Clara’s life, she saw genuine emotion break through his face.

Not anger.

Not calculation.

Grief.

"Hello, Ellie."

Elena’s gun remained aimed at him.

"Don’t call me that."

"I thought you were dead."

"No, you hoped I stayed dead."

Richard flinched.

"You don’t know what happened."

"I know you took Gerald’s money."

"I was twenty-one."

"You were old enough to choose."

"I chose wrong."

Elena laughed.

"Seventeen years late."

Clara stepped forward.

"What does Simon have?"

Richard looked at her.

"Proof Chloe isn’t legally ours."

Clara went cold.

"What?"

"Her adoption file."

"I gave birth to Chloe."

"Yes."

"Then what are you talking about?"

Richard looked toward the tunnel.

"Simon can alter anything."

Clara understood.

"He’s creating documents."

"He already did."

"Why?"

"To take her from both of us."

"Why would he want Chloe?"

Richard’s eyes filled with something Clara had never seen before.

Fear.

"Because Chloe is the trust."

Clara stared.

"What does that mean?"

"The Collins trust doesn’t transfer fully to you."

Richard spoke quickly.

"Rebecca changed the structure before she died. If her surviving child had a daughter, control passes through that child at age seven."

Clara’s stomach tightened.

"Chloe turns seven in three months."

"Yes."

"So all of this..."

"Is bigger than your inheritance."

Richard looked at Elena.

"It always was."

Elena did not lower the gun.

"Why were you planning to kill Clara?"

Richard looked at his wife.

"I wasn’t."

Clara pulled the note from her purse.

"No hospital. No residence. No digital trail. Airport route preferred."

"Those weren’t instructions to kill you."

"What were they?"

"To hide you."

Clara laughed bitterly.

"Inside Container 7C?"

Richard stared at Dean.

Dean’s expression changed.

Richard understood.

"Simon gave you the manifest."

Dean said nothing.

Richard looked at Clara.

"Container 7C was for evidence."

"Seventy-eight kilograms."

"Documents, drives, physical records."

"The syringes labeled with my initials?"

Richard looked genuinely confused.

"What syringes?"

"The death certificate?"

"What death certificate?"

Elena watched him.

"He didn’t know."

Clara turned.

"Don’t."

"I know my brother."

"You haven’t known him for seventeen years."

"I know when he’s lying."

Richard looked toward the stairs.

"We don’t have time."

"You always say that when you want control."

"Simon knows you’re here."

"How?"

"Because I told him."

Clara recoiled.

Richard continued.

"I needed him to believe I was still cooperating."

"Why?"

"Because Simon ordered Phase Three."

Silence.

Clara heard the unknown voice again in her memory.

If the client still exists, does the plan to deal with it remain unchanged?

"Who was the second man on the call?"

Richard looked at Elena.

She answered.

"Peter Vale."

Simon’s father.

Clara frowned.

"I thought he died."

Richard’s face hardened.

"That’s what everyone thinks."

A sound came from above.

A metallic clatter.

Elena looked up.

"No."

Richard turned toward the staircase.

"Run."

Smoke began pouring through the corridor.

Not ordinary smoke.

White.

Dense.

Chemical.

Richard covered his mouth.

"Simon’s flushing the house."

Clara stumbled backward.

"What is it?"

"Sedative gas."

Elena grabbed Clara.

"Tunnel."

Dean fired toward the stairs again.

A figure appeared briefly through the smoke.

Dean shouted.

"I’ll hold them."

Richard grabbed his arm.

"You’ll die."

Dean looked at him.

"Maybe I should have done something useful seventeen years ago."

He pushed Richard toward Clara.

"Go."

They ran toward the tunnel.

May you like

Behind them came three gunshots.

Then silence.
