Chapter 3 - The Wedding That Stopped Breathing)

The moment Emily stepped onto the aisle, the string quartet reached the final bars of the wedding processional.

No one understood what was happening.

Not yet.

Emily did.

She had one chance.

Victoria was behind her.

Security was moving from the side doors.

The photograph was still in her pocket.

Sophie was crying in her arms.

And Damian was watching.

Emily walked.

Her legs trembled.

Every instinct told her to run away from the hundreds of strangers staring at her.

Instead she moved toward the altar.

Ten feet.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Then Victoria appeared.

"Throw those filthy kids out right now."

The words traveled farther than she intended.

Guests gasped.

Damian stepped down.

Everything happened almost exactly as Claire had feared and almost exactly as Emily had been told.

If Victoria tries to make you leave, don't argue about me.

Make Damian look at you.

Tell him your name.

Give him the picture.

Trust what happens next.

Emily had asked her mother why she could not simply call Damian.

Claire had laughed bitterly.

"Because every road to Damian goes through someone who doesn't want me reaching him."

Now Emily understood.

Victoria grabbed her.

Damian stopped her.

Emily called him Daddy.

And the world changed.

After Victoria snatched the photograph from Damian's hand, Damian did not shout.

His anger became frighteningly controlled.

"Give me the photograph."

Victoria clutched it.

"This is ridiculous."

"Give it to me."

"She's been coached."

"By whom?"

"Obviously her mother."

Damian's eyes narrowed.

"You said you didn't know her mother."

Victoria realized the mistake.

"That isn't what I meant."

"What did you mean?"

A hundred phones were recording.

Victoria looked around.

"We are not doing this here."

Damian turned to Marcus.

"Close the ballroom doors."

Victoria stared at him.

"What?"

"No one leaves until I understand what's happening."

Marcus hesitated.

"Damian."

"You heard me."

Marcus moved toward security.

Damian crouched in front of Emily.

"You said your mother is missing."

Emily nodded.

"How long?"

"Three days."

"Did you tell police?"

"They said maybe she left."

"And you don't believe that?"

"Mom never leaves Sophie."

Damian looked at the toddler clinging to Emily.

"Where is Sophie's father?"

Emily looked down.

"Mom said he died before Sophie was born."

Victoria interrupted.

"Can we please stop treating a child's story like evidence?"

Damian ignored her.

"Emily, what is your mother's full name?"

"Claire Elizabeth Bennett."

Damian shut his eyes.

It was her.

No coincidence.

No misunderstanding.

Claire.

When he opened his eyes, Emily was watching him.

"Did you know her?"

"Yes."

"Were you her boyfriend?"

Victoria stepped closer.

"Damian."

He lifted one hand.

She stopped.

Damian answered Emily.

"Yes."

Emily's face crumpled.

"Then she told the truth."

"About what?"

"She said you loved her."

Damian's throat tightened.

"I did."

Victoria stared at him as though he had slapped her.

Emily reached into her pocket and took out the brass key.

"My mom told me if anything happened, I had to bring you this."

Damian accepted it.

A number was engraved on one side.

317.

On the other was an address.

Queens.

Victoria saw it.

She whispered, "No."

Damian looked up.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You recognize this?"

"No."

"You reacted."

"I'm standing at my wedding while a child claims you're her father. Forgive me if I'm reacting."

Emily pointed at the photograph on the floor.

"Ask her why she was there."

Damian picked it up.

Claire stood outside a small medical clinic.

The date printed on the corner was eight years and seven months earlier.

Claire was pregnant.

Victoria stood in the background beside a black car.

Damian remembered that week.

He had been in London after his father suffered a heart attack.

Claire stopped taking his calls shortly afterward.

Two weeks later, his attorney told him Claire had accepted a financial settlement and wanted no further contact.

Damian had never seen the settlement.

He had trusted his father.

He had trusted his lawyers.

He had eventually trusted Victoria when she told him Claire had moved on.

Now he looked at the date.

Then Emily's age.

Eight.

His hands began trembling.

Victoria saw the calculation happening.

"Damian, photographs can be manipulated."

"Was this manipulated?"

"I don't know."

"Were you there?"

"No."

"Look at me."

Victoria did.

"Were you there?"

"No."

Emily suddenly spoke.

"My mom wrote something on the back."

Damian turned over the photograph.

The writing was faded.

If he ever sees this, tell him Victoria knows everything.

Damian read it twice.

Then he turned toward the guests.

His mother was standing.

Margaret looked almost as pale as Victoria.

Ethan stared at the photograph.

Marcus remained near the door.

Damian looked at the officiant.

Then at Victoria.

Then at the wedding ring waiting on the velvet cushion.

The entire future he had imagined that morning suddenly felt like a room built over a sinkhole.

Victoria reached for his hand.

"Please."

Damian stepped away.

"Wedding's over."

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Victoria's eyes widened.

"You can't be serious."

"I am."

"Because of a photograph?"

"Because an eight year old girl knows things you've spent ten minutes pretending not to know."

"Damian."

"Take off the ring."

"We aren't married yet."

"Then consider that fortunate."

Humiliation flashed across Victoria's face.

It transformed into fury.

"You are destroying seven years because some abandoned child walked in here?"

Damian looked at Emily.

The little girl flinched at the word abandoned.

He turned back.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I'm stopping myself from making the biggest mistake of my life because of the way you just spoke about her."

Victoria stared at him.

Police sirens sounded faintly outside.

Emily's face changed.

"I didn't call them."

Damian looked at Marcus.

"Did you?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

Nora appeared near the side entrance.

"I did."

Everyone looked at her.

Nora stepped forward.

"I recognized Claire."

Victoria whispered, "You."

Nora's face hardened.

"Yes. Me."

She pointed at Emily.

"That child came here terrified, carrying a toddler, saying her mother disappeared."

Nora looked at Damian.

"And eight years ago, I watched Claire Bennett leave a Vance event crying after Victoria followed her into a private room."

Victoria's eyes flashed.

"That's a lie."

Nora did not move.

"I wondered for years what happened in that room."

She looked at Emily.

"Now I think it's time someone found out."

Police entered the ballroom.

Victoria took one step backward.

Damian noticed.

May you like

So did Emily.

And near the locked doors, Marcus Vale slowly removed his silver watch and slipped it into his pocket.
