Chapter 14 - The Truth Victoria Could No Longer Hide)

Marcus was arrested before dawn.

Not for Claire's kidnapping.

Not for Daniel Reed's death.

For obstruction, unauthorized access to protected systems and undisclosed payments connected to Hargrove's ledger.

He surrendered without resistance.

Damian refused to believe either guilt or innocence until he heard the explanation.

Marcus sat behind glass in the federal interview facility.

"Yes," he said. "Hargrove paid me."

Damian stared.

"Why?"

"To investigate Richard."

"My father?"

"Yes."

"You're saying my father's attorney paid you to investigate my father."

"Not exactly."

"Then make it exact."

Marcus leaned back.

"Richard discovered the biomedical program had continued after he ordered it closed. He suspected Michael. Hargrove suspected Richard."

"And you?"

"I suspected both."

"So you took money from Hargrove."

"I took money from everyone."

Damian almost laughed.

"That is your defense?"

"It allowed me to see what they were hiding."

"You let Claire be threatened."

"Yes."

"You kept Emily from me."

"Yes."

"You lied for years."

"Yes."

"Why should I believe anything else?"

"You shouldn't."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"You should follow evidence."

"What evidence?"

"The ledger shows money coming to me."

"Correct."

"Look where it came from."

"Hargrove."

"No."

Marcus leaned toward the glass.

"Look at the originating accounts."

Federal investigators did.

The payments had passed through Hargrove's firm.

Before that, shell corporations.

Before that, a private trust.

The trust belonged to Celeste Hale.

Victoria's mother.

At noon, Celeste was arrested at a private airfield in Vermont.

She had been preparing to cross into Canada under a different name.

Inside her luggage were two passports.

Cash.

A laptop.

And another Vance anniversary watch.

Michael's.

Victoria broke when she learned.

Her attorney could no longer control her.

She asked to speak to Damian.

He almost refused.

Claire changed his mind.

"You need to hear it from her."

So he went.

Victoria sat on the other side of the interview table.

No wedding dress.

No diamonds.

No carefully styled hair.

Just a frightened woman who had spent years building a life on a lie.

"My mother knew Michael was alive," she said.

"For how long?"

"Seven years."

"Since the boating accident?"

"Yes."

"Did she help him fake his death?"

"I think so."

"Why?"

"She loved him."

"She married someone else."

"She always loved Michael."

Damian stared.

"What did Michael want?"

Victoria shook her head.

"I don't know."

"You knew enough to destroy Claire's life."

"That wasn't Michael's plan."

"Then whose?"

"My mother's."

Damian became still.

Victoria continued.

"Michael told her Claire had seen restricted records. My mother convinced your father Claire was dangerous."

"Why?"

"Because if Claire stayed with you, she would keep asking questions."

"So you helped."

"Yes."

"You knew she was carrying my child."

Victoria cried now.

"I was jealous."

"That's not an explanation."

"I know."

"You watched me grieve her."

"I know."

"You watched Emily grow up without a father."

"I didn't know where Claire went after she left New York."

"You could have told me she was pregnant."

"I was afraid you'd find her."

"Exactly."

Victoria looked down.

Damian's anger no longer needed volume.

"You didn't love me."

She looked up.

"I did."

"No. You wanted the version of your life that required me."

Victoria covered her face.

For the first time, Damian saw no point in punishing her with words.

Reality had already done it.

He stood.

Victoria suddenly said, "Marcus isn't the one who took Claire."

Damian stopped.

"How do you know?"

"My mother told me."

"When?"

"After Emily arrived at the wedding."

"What did she say?"

"She said Marcus had ruined everything by trying to protect Claire."

Damian turned.

"Then who took her?"

Victoria shook her head.

"I don't know."

"What about Michael?"

"My mother was afraid of him too."

"She helped him disappear."

"Seven years ago."

"What changed?"

Victoria's eyes moved toward the camera in the corner.

"Michael came back because Daniel Reed died."

"Daniel died two years ago."

"Yes."

"Why wait?"

"He wasn't waiting."

"What does that mean?"

"He's been looking for something."

"Sophie?"

"No."

Damian sat again.

"Then what?"

Victoria whispered, "The original research files."

"We have Daniel's memory card."

"Those are copies."

"Where are the originals?"

"I don't know."

"Why does Sophie matter?"

Victoria looked genuinely confused.

"I don't know."

"Then what do you know?"

Victoria leaned closer.

"My mother said Daniel hid the only key to those files somewhere no one would destroy."

"Sophie?"

"Maybe."

"Inside her coat?"

"No."

"The memory card?"

"I don't think so."

"Then where?"

Victoria shook her head.

Damian stood.

"I have nothing else to say to you."

"Wait."

He stopped at the door.

Victoria's voice trembled.

"There's something about Emily."

Damian turned.

"What about her?"

"My mother had a photograph."

"What photograph?"

"Emily as a baby."

"Why?"

"I asked the same thing."

"What did she say?"

Victoria swallowed.

"She said Claire had no idea what happened the night Emily was born."

Damian's blood went cold.

"What happened?"

"I don't know."

"Victoria."

"I swear."

"Where is the photograph?"

"My mother's safe."

Federal agents searched Celeste's apartment again.

Behind a false wall, they found a safe.

Inside were documents.

Cash.

Research notes.

And three photographs.

The first showed Claire in a hospital bed holding newborn Emily.

The second showed Richard Vance standing in the hospital corridor.

Damian had never known his father was there.

The third photograph made everyone silent.

A man stood beside the hospital nursery, looking through the glass at newborn Emily.

Michael Vance.
