Chapter 12 - The Mother Who Refused to Stay Dead)

The discovery changed the investigation.
Michael Vance was no longer a ghost in family history.
He became a suspect.
Federal investigators joined the case because of the biomedical files.
Old corporate records were seized.
Former employees were questioned.
Victoria was questioned again.
This time her composure cracked.
She sat across from Brooks with her attorney beside her.
Damian watched remotely.
"Michael is dead," Victoria insisted.
"We found his watch."
"Anyone could have put it there."
"Claire said she saw him."
"Claire lies."
"About what?"
"Everything."
"She lied about Damian being Emily's father?"
Victoria looked away.
"That turned out to be true."
"She lied about knowing you?"
Silence.
"She lied about you threatening her?"
"I never threatened her."
"Did Michael?"
Victoria's attorney touched her arm.
She ignored him.
"You don't understand Michael."
"Help us."
Victoria laughed nervously.
"No one helps you understand Michael."
"Was he involved eight years ago?"
Victoria stared at the table.
"Yes."
Damian stopped breathing.
"What did he do?"
Brooks asked.
"He convinced Richard that Claire was dangerous."
"Why?"
"Because she had seen something."
"What?"
"I don't know."
"You expect us to believe that?"
"Claire attended a Vance charity gala. She went into a restricted office looking for Damian."
Damian remembered the night.
Claire had disappeared for almost an hour.
When she returned, she wanted to leave.
He had assumed she was sick.
Victoria continued.
"She saw Michael arguing with Daniel Reed."
Eight years ago.
Daniel Reed had known Claire long before Sophie was born.
"What were they arguing about?"
"Research."
"Did Claire know Daniel?"
"Not then."
"How did they reconnect?"
"I don't know."
Brooks leaned forward.
"Why did you help separate Claire from Damian?"
Victoria's eyes filled.
"Because I loved him."
Damian felt nothing.
Not anger.
Not sympathy.
Only emptiness.
Victoria continued.
"Richard told me Damian would destroy himself for Claire. Michael said Claire would eventually blackmail the family."
"So you lied."
"Yes."
"Intercepted messages."
"Some."
"Blocked her access."
"Yes."
"Did you forge a settlement?"
Victoria hesitated.
"Richard's attorney did."
"Who?"
"Arthur Hargrove."
Damian knew him.
Hargrove had retired to Florida.
Federal agents were already searching records.
"Did Claire accept money?"
"No."
"Did Damian sign anything?"
"No."
"So both were deliberately deceived."
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
A satisfying piece of the past finally locked into place.
Damian had not abandoned Claire.
Claire had not abandoned him.
Their separation had been manufactured.
It did not give them eight years back.
But it restored something Damian had thought was permanently poisoned.
The truth of what they had been to one another.
Brooks asked the final question.
"Where is Claire?"
Victoria shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Did you speak to her the day before she disappeared?"
"Yes."
"About what?"
"She said she was going to expose everything."
"What did you say?"
"I told her she would destroy Damian's life."
"Her daughter had already lost eight years with him."
"I know."
"Did Claire threaten you?"
"No."
"What did she say?"
Victoria's voice dropped.
"She said, 'The wedding is the last chance I'm giving you to tell him yourself.'"
Damian understood.
Claire had planned to reveal Emily before the ceremony.
Victoria knew.
That explained the panic.
Brooks asked, "Did you tell Michael?"
Victoria's face changed.
"No."
"Marcus?"
"No."
"Anyone?"
Victoria looked toward the one way glass.
Damian felt it before she spoke.
"I told someone."
"Who?"
"My mother."
Celeste Hale.
Victoria's mother had left the wedding before police began formal interviews.
Her phone was now switched off.
Federal agents went to her apartment.
Empty.
Closets open.
Passport gone.
A black SUV missing.
Damian called Margaret.
"Did Celeste know Michael?"
His mother answered immediately.
"Yes."
"How well?"
A pause.
"Very."
"What does that mean?"
Margaret's voice became quiet.
"Before Celeste married Victoria's father, she was engaged to Michael."
Damian sat down.
Another secret.
Another family connection buried for decades.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't think it mattered."
"It always matters."
Police issued a search notice for Celeste Hale.
At two in the morning, Brooks received a call.
A hospital in Pennsylvania had admitted an unidentified woman.
No wallet.
No phone.
Head injury.
Found walking beside a highway.
Brown hair.
Approximately thirty three years old.
The hospital had circulated a photograph.
Brooks showed Damian.
He forgot how to breathe.
Older.
Thinner.
Bruising along one cheek.
But unmistakable.
Claire.
Damian drove through the night.
Emily slept in the back seat with Sophie.
At sunrise, they reached the hospital.
Emily saw Claire through the glass.
"Mommy."
She ran.
Claire opened her eyes just as Emily reached the bed.
For several seconds she seemed unable to understand what she was seeing.
Then her arms opened.
Emily climbed onto the bed.
Sophie screamed "Mommy" and followed.
Claire held both girls.
She cried against their hair.
Damian remained at the door.
Eight years stood between them.
Claire looked up.
Their eyes met.
Everything they had lost seemed to fill the room.
"Damian."
His name sounded almost exactly as he remembered.
He stepped inside.
"You found me," Claire whispered.
Damian looked at Emily.
"No."
May you like
He smiled through tears.
"She found me."
