Chapter 4 - The Sealed File

Richard led them through a second tunnel as armed men entered the estate.
The passage opened beneath an abandoned chapel half a mile beyond the walls. They emerged behind a cracked stone altar while rain hammered the roof. Marcus barricaded the tunnel door with an iron bench.
"You have five minutes before they find the exit," he said.
Richard removed a small metal case from beneath his coat.
"The sealed adoption file is in here."
Eleanor reached for it, but he held it back.
"First, you need to understand why Brooke vanished."
"Then stop speaking in riddles."
Richard placed the case on the altar.
"Twenty-seven years ago, Bellamy Maritime transported more than cargo. My father used relief shipments to move money, identities, and witnesses across borders. When the network began to collapse, several children connected to those witnesses were placed under new names."
Sienna stared at him. "Our family trafficked children?"
"No. We hid them. At least, that is what I was told."
Eleanor heard the distinction and did not trust it.
Richard continued. "Your mother, Helena Vale, worked for the network. She took one child and raised her as her own."
Eleanor's mouth went dry.
"Which child?"
"I do not know."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"The identifying page was removed years ago."
He opened the metal case. Inside was a thin file stamped with a government seal. The first pages confirmed a protected placement involving Helena Vale. Names had been redacted. Dates matched Eleanor's infancy, not Brooke's.
Eleanor looked at the birth date.
Her birth date.
Sienna whispered, "Eleanor..."
Eleanor turned the page.
A photograph had been clipped away, leaving only rust marks. Beneath it was a notation.
Biological father believed to be senior financial officer within Bellamy network. Child may retain claim to dormant custodial assets.
Richard said, "When Brooke began auditing the old accounts, she found a trust linked to that child. It contains controlling shares in Bellamy Maritime."
Sienna looked from Richard to Eleanor.
"Then the wedding transfer was never the real prize."
"No," Richard said. "Arthur needed the marriage to gain temporary authority so he could locate and drain the dormant trust before the rightful beneficiary appeared."
Eleanor struggled to keep her voice steady. "And Brooke?"
"Brooke found evidence that the beneficiary was you."
The tunnel door shook behind them.
Marcus checked his weapon. "Two minutes."
Richard removed a flash drive from the file. "Brooke copied the trust ledger. Arthur married her to put all evidence under spousal privilege and to control her access. When she refused to sign the annulment, he could not remarry legally without exposing the first marriage. But he needed Sienna's wedding to trigger the transfer."
"So he kept Brooke alive," Eleanor said, "because he still needed her signature."
"Yes."
"And you helped him hide her."
Richard's face broke slightly. "I helped her hide from him. Then someone inside my security team sold the location."
The chapel windows exploded.
Marcus pulled Sienna behind the altar as bullets tore through the pews. Richard shoved the metal case into Eleanor's hands.
"Go through the sacristy!"
They ran.
A side door opened into a graveyard. Black vehicles blocked the road, so they moved between headstones toward the tree line. Eleanor heard Richard fall behind them.
Sienna turned.
Her father was on one knee near the chapel door, blood spreading across his shirt.
"Dad!"
Richard raised a hand, warning her back. A masked gunman approached him.
Then, unexpectedly, the gunman removed his mask.
Julian Cross.
The accountant Arthur claimed Brooke had murdered.
Eleanor froze.
Julian was alive.
He looked directly at her across the graveyard, then pressed a finger to his lips.
The next gunshot struck the ground near Eleanor's feet, forcing them into the trees.
They reached Marcus's hidden vehicle and sped away as smoke rose behind the chapel.
Sienna sobbed in the back seat. "We left him."
"We would be dead beside him," Marcus said.
Eleanor opened the metal case.
The flash drive was gone.
In its place lay a note she had not seen before.
Julian has the ledger. Do not trust Marcus.
Eleanor read it twice.
Then she looked at Marcus's reflection in the rearview mirror.
He met her eyes.
"What is it?"
Eleanor closed the case.
"Nothing."
Her phone vibrated.
A new message from the unknown number appeared.
Detective Hale was paid the night Brooke disappeared.
Eleanor slipped the phone face down on her knee.

Outside, the city rose through the rain.
Beside her, Marcus drove them toward a safe house only he knew.
