Chapter 11 - Above the Harbor

The container lifted fifty feet above the pier.
Metal groaned around them. Through the open doors, the harbor tilted away beneath a cold morning sky. Marcus grabbed the frame while Richard's wheelchair rolled backward. Eleanor and Sienna caught it before it reached the edge.
Brooke searched the surveillance console.
"The crane is remote-controlled."
A monitor flickered on.
Conrad Voss appeared from an elegant office. Silver-haired and composed, he looked more like a banker than a man attempting to drop six people into the harbor.
"Good morning," he said.
Sienna moved toward the camera. "Stop the crane."
"Give me the rings."
"We have one."
"You have all three. Helena taught you to overlook what appears familiar."
Eleanor examined the photographs, furniture, medical supplies. Familiar.
The black clutch she had carried at the wedding sat on the bed.
She had left it in her apartment.
Someone had replaced it before Dock 14.
She opened it and tore the lining. A ring fell into her palm.
Sienna searched Arthur's discarded jacket and found another sewn beneath the label.
Three rings.
Conrad smiled. "At last."
Brooke held her ring beneath the console scanner. Symbols appeared on the monitor.
"Do not activate them," Richard warned.
Conrad said, "The trust is not money. It is evidence. Thirty years of records capable of destroying governments, families, and institutions. Helena wanted to release it. I preserved stability."
"You preserved criminals," Marcus said.
"I preserved nations from scandal."
The container rose higher.
Conrad continued. "Place the rings in the three slots, and the crane will lower."
Eleanor found three circular openings in the console.
Sienna whispered, "He needs us to activate it."
Brooke nodded. "The container is a biometric chamber."
The walls contained hidden sensors, recording voice, face, pulse, and fingerprints. Conrad had brought all three heirs into one controlled space.
Eleanor looked at the open harbor below.
"We activate it."
Richard protested, but she held up a hand.
"We activate the first layer only."
Brooke understood. The original certificate had multiple encoded layers. The rings might do the same.
Each woman inserted a ring.
The console illuminated.
Three names appeared.
Eleanor Vale.
Brooke Vale.
Sienna Bellamy.
Then a fourth name appeared beneath them.
Mara Voss.
Conrad's face changed.
Sienna read it aloud. "Who is Mara?"
The crane jerked.
Conrad shouted, "Remove the rings!"
Brooke smiled grimly. "You did not know."
The trust required four heirs, not three.
A hidden compartment opened inside the console. It contained a small recorder.
Helena's voice played.
"If the three of you are hearing this, Conrad has gathered you together. He believes my daughters are the only keys. They are not. The witness child had a sister."
Sienna gripped the console.
"My sister?"
"Her name is Mara. Conrad raised her under his own name."
Conrad reached toward something off-screen.
Marcus fired at the monitor. The image shattered, but the crane began swinging the container over open water.
Brooke worked the controls. "I can slow it, not stop it."
Eleanor looked at the emergency release above the door. "If we drop the container now, it lands beside the ship."
"Or on it," Marcus said.
Richard locked his wheelchair and said, "Do it."
They pulled the release.
The container fell.
It struck the cargo ship's deck with an impact that threw everyone to the floor. The doors slammed shut. Darkness followed.
When Eleanor regained consciousness, water sprayed through a crack in the wall. The container had split open and was sliding toward the ship's edge.
Sienna found the door lever.
They climbed onto the deck seconds before the container toppled into the harbor.
Police sirens approached from shore. Marcus had transmitted Conrad's confession before shooting the monitor.
But Conrad was gone from his office by the time authorities arrived.
In the remains of the container, they recovered the recorder and one surviving photograph.
It showed two little girls at Saint Orison. One was Sienna.
The other had dark hair and a birthmark shaped like a crescent near her ear.
On the back, Helena had written an address.
Mara Voss.
Rosewood Academy.
Do not let Conrad know she remembers.
Brooke looked up the school.
Rosewood Academy had closed fifteen years earlier after a student disappeared.
The missing student's name was Mara Voss.
Her body had never been found.
Eleanor's phone vibrated.
Unknown Number: The fourth heir is coming home.
Attached was a photograph taken moments earlier.

It showed a woman standing on the pier, watching them.
A crescent-shaped birthmark was visible near her ear.
