Chapter 14 - The Other Helena

The woman was younger than Helena but carried the same face, the same posture, the same scar near the eyebrow.
Eleanor felt as if childhood itself had walked out of the dark.
Brooke whispered, "Who are you?"
The woman looked at the countdown.
"Four minutes."
Arthur smiled at her. "You took your time."
Mara raised her weapon. "Name."
"Clara Rowan."
Sienna recoiled. "Rowan?"
Clara looked at her. "Elise Rowan was my sister."
The witness child's aunt.
She explained quickly. After Saint Orison, Helena had hidden Clara under her own identities. The passports found in the black box belonged partly to Helena and partly to Clara. Their resemblance allowed both women to move through the network as one person, creating the illusion that Helena could be in multiple places.
"Which one did we bury?" Eleanor asked.
Clara's eyes softened. "Neither. The coffin was empty."
"Then why did Helena stay away?"
"Because Conrad had Brooke."
Brooke shook her head. "He took me only eleven months ago."
"He had leverage long before he had your body."
Clara inserted a key into the central console. The countdown paused at three minutes twelve seconds.
"The archive release was initiated by Helena from the hospital," she said. "She believes the time for secrecy is over."
Mara moved toward the controls. "Full release will kill protected witnesses."
"Not if we separate the records."
"You cannot in three minutes."
"I can with the master index."
Brooke removed the original marriage certificate.
Clara looked at Arthur. "He told you the certificate was a key. He never told you it was also a filter."
Arthur's confidence finally collapsed.
Brooke placed the document beneath a scanner. Blue fibers illuminated in complex patterns. The system began dividing the archive into two sets: criminal evidence and protected identities.
Conrad groaned on the floor.
Celeste crawled toward him.
Marcus restrained Arthur again while Sienna knelt beside Richard. Blood soaked his shirt, but he remained conscious.
Clara said, "All four heirs must approve the filtered release."
Eleanor placed her hand on the first console.
Brooke placed hers on the second.
Sienna hesitated at the third.
On the screen, names connected to her father appeared among the criminal records. Richard had authorized illegal transfers, hidden payments, and witness relocations. Some had saved lives. Others had protected Bellamy assets.
Release would destroy him.
Richard saw the screen.
"Do it."
Sienna cried silently. Then she placed her hand on the console.
Mara stood before the fourth.
Conrad reached for her ankle.
"If you release it," he rasped, "you erase everything I built for you."
Mara looked down at him.
"You built a cage."
She pressed her palm to the scanner.
Filtered release authorized.
Across the world, encrypted files began moving to courts, investigators, and news organizations. The archive copied protected identities into a sealed humanitarian registry controlled jointly by the four heirs.
Arthur watched the progress bar reach ninety percent.
Then he broke free.
He grabbed Celeste's fallen weapon and fired at the server.
The bullet shattered the primary drive.
The upload stopped at ninety-three percent.
Emergency alarms filled the vault.
Arthur ran through the control room. Marcus followed, but steel shutters closed between them.
Eleanor checked the screen.
Most of the evidence had been released.
Seven percent remained hidden.
The missing files were grouped beneath one label.
Project Bride.
Brooke stared at it. "That was not in the ledger."
Clara's face showed fear.
"What is Project Bride?" Eleanor asked.
Clara did not answer.
Conrad laughed through his pain.
"It is why Arthur needed a wedding."
Sienna looked toward the shutter where Arthur had escaped.
"Not for the trust?"
"The trust was only funding," Conrad said. "Project Bride is continuation."
"Continuation of what?"
He smiled at Clara.
She whispered the answer.
"Identity replacement."
A monitor activated, showing security footage from the ballroom above.
The wedding décor had been removed overnight. In its place stood rows of medical equipment and scanning devices. Workers in unmarked uniforms prepared the room.
At the center, Arthur held a folder marked with Sienna's name.

Beside him stood a bride in a white gown.
Her face was identical to Sienna's.
