Chapter 12 - Mara

The woman disappeared before they reached the pier.
Security cameras captured her entering a taxi, but the license plate belonged to a vehicle destroyed ten years earlier. Her face matched no current identity database. Conrad had erased her thoroughly.
Brooke studied the photograph.
"She was at the wedding."
Eleanor enlarged the background of several guest images. The same woman appeared near the orchestra, then beside the kitchen doors, then in the reflection of the ballroom screen just before the black box was opened.
Mara had watched everything.
Sienna touched the crescent birthmark in the photograph. "She is my sister."
Richard looked away.
"You knew," Sienna said.
"I knew the witness child had a sibling. I did not know Conrad kept her."
"How can you not know anything that matters?"
His face showed the damage of the question.
Helena regained consciousness that afternoon. When they showed her Mara's photograph, she wept.
"Conrad told me she died at Rosewood."
"Why was she there?" Eleanor asked.
"Because she remembered Saint Orison. She remembered men carrying infants through smoke. Conrad feared her testimony."
Brooke said, "So he placed her in a school he controlled."
"Rosewood was not a school. It was a conditioning center for children whose memories threatened the network."
Sienna went pale.
Helena reached for her hand, but Sienna did not take it.
"Did Mara send the black box?" Eleanor asked.
"I believe so."
"Why expose Arthur but hide from us?"
"Because she does not know whether you are victims or successors."
A message arrived from Mara before sunset.
No words. Only coordinates.
They led to Vale House.
The childhood home stood at the end of a tree-lined road, untouched since Helena's funeral. Dust covered the furniture. Family portraits remained on the walls, frozen in a life that now seemed manufactured.
In the dining room, four places had been set.
Mara sat at the far end.
She wore a gray coat and no jewelry. The birthmark near her ear was visible. She looked at Sienna for a long time before speaking.
"You have our mother's eyes."
Sienna's voice shook. "Who was she?"
"Her name was Elise Rowan. She worked at Saint Orison. She discovered the identity program and tried to expose it. Conrad ordered her death."
Richard gripped the back of a chair.
Mara looked at him. "You signed the transport authorization."
"I believed it was witness relocation."
"You always believed what protected you."
Sienna sat across from Mara.
"Why did you send the gift?"
"To stop the wedding."
"You could have warned me."
"Would you have believed a stranger over Arthur and your father?"
Sienna did not answer.
Mara placed a fourth ring on the table.
"The trust opens at dawn tomorrow. Conrad will try to activate it using forged biometrics. We must reach the original vault first."
Brooke asked, "Where is it?"
"Under the wedding venue."
Eleanor remembered the ballroom, the screens, the gift table.
Mara explained that the luxury estate had once been a Bellamy records facility. Helena selected it for the wedding because the trust vault lay beneath the dance floor. The marriage ceremony was meant to gather signatures, facial scans, and legal identities in one place.
Arthur believed he was marrying Sienna for corporate control.
Conrad knew the ceremony was also the final activation event.
"The black box interrupted the process," Mara said. "But only temporarily."
Eleanor looked at her. "Why message me after the wedding? Why show me Brooke?"
"Because I needed to know whether you would rescue her or protect the evidence."
"And?"
Mara's gaze was unreadable.
"You tried to do both."
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Marcus raised his gun.
Someone moved through the hall.
They searched the house and found no intruder, but in Eleanor's childhood bedroom, a window stood open. On the bed lay a black gift box.
Inside was a severed strip of Arthur's tuxedo and a phone.
The phone played a live feed from the wedding venue.
Arthur stood in the empty ballroom beside Conrad.
Between them, Celeste Vance held a gun against Helena's hospital nurse.
Arthur looked into the camera.
"Bring the four rings before dawn."
Conrad stepped forward.
"And bring Richard Bellamy."
Mara watched the screen without blinking.
Eleanor noticed her hand beneath the table.
She was holding a second phone.
On it, a message was already typed.

They are coming. Prepare the vault.
Before Eleanor could read the recipient's name, Mara deleted it.
