THE GIFT BAG HIT THE FLOOR / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Hearing

Six weeks later, Madison entered the courthouse carrying a folder rather than a baby.

Lily remained at home with a trusted nurse.

Ethan sat across the aisle beside his attorney. He looked thinner, but his expression still carried resentment.

His attorney argued that Ethan’s actions were mistakes caused by financial pressure.

Nadia presented the bank records.

The judge reviewed evidence showing Ethan had transferred money without permission, forged Madison’s signature, attempted to secure a loan against her inherited property, and ignored messages during her medical emergency.

Ethan claimed he had intended to repay everything.

“Intentions do not erase actions,” the judge said.

Linda testified next.

She described the party, the declined cards, the gifts, and Ethan’s confession during the drive to the hospital.

Ethan stared at her in disbelief.

“Mom,” he said.

Linda did not look at him.

“I love my son,” she told the court. “But loving him does not require me to lie for him.”

The court granted Madison temporary primary custody while the divorce proceedings continued. Ethan was allowed supervised visits after completing parenting classes and complying with the separate financial investigation.

The Hawthorne Street house remained entirely Madison’s property.

The attempted lien was voided.

Funds still held by vendors were returned to her account.

Ethan’s business assets were frozen while investigators traced the missing money.

Outside the courtroom, Ethan approached Madison.

Officer Hayes remained a few steps away.

“You destroyed my life,” Ethan said.

Madison looked at him without fear.

“No. I stopped you from destroying mine.”

“You turned my mother against me.”

“She told the truth.”

“I made one mistake.”

“You made a choice every time you lied, every time you took money, every time you ignored my calls.”

Ethan’s anger faded when he realized she would not argue.

Madison turned away.

For the first time, he could not follow her.
