Chapter 10 - The Right Kind of Party

One year after the night in Room 305, Madison held a birthday party for Lily in the backyard of the Hawthorne Street house.
There were no chandeliers, expensive musicians, or towering cakes.
A string of paper flowers hung between two trees. A small table held sandwiches, fruit, lemonade, and a single pink cake.
Dr. Patel attended with her family. Nadia brought Lily a collection of children’s books. Officer Hayes stopped by in plain clothes and left a stuffed bear near the gifts.
Linda arrived carrying one small package.
“I kept the receipt,” she said quietly.
Madison smiled.
Inside was a silver bracelet engraved with two words.
Choose peace.
Linda watched Lily playing on a blanket.
“Ethan asked me to give you a letter.”
Madison’s smile disappeared.
“I told him no,” Linda continued. “If he has something to say, he can say it through the proper channels. Today belongs to Lily.”
Madison looked at her with surprise.
“Thank you.”
Linda nodded.
As the afternoon sunlight moved across the yard, Nadia lifted a glass of lemonade.
“To Madison,” she said, “who made the hardest decision when she was at her weakest.”
Madison shook her head.
“No. To Lily.”
She lifted her daughter into her arms.
“She made me understand that protecting yourself is not selfish when someone else’s safety depends on you.”
The guests gathered around as Madison placed a tiny candle in the cake.
Lily reached toward the flame, laughing while Madison gently moved her hand away.
Everyone began singing.
Madison looked around the yard.
The house was safe.
Her money was secure.
Her daughter was loved.
Her future belonged to her again.
For months, she had thought the most important sound in her life would always be those six unanswered calls.
But as Lily laughed in her arms, Madison finally understood.
Silence had not ended her family.
It had revealed who deserved to remain in it.

She kissed her daughter’s forehead and blew out the candle beside her.
This time, the party celebrated the right person.
