Chapter 3 - Madison’s Inheritance
Madison had inherited the small house on Hawthorne Street from her grandmother three years earlier.
The property was modest, but it was fully paid for. Her grandmother had also left her eighty thousand dollars with one request.
Use this to build a safe life.
Madison had placed most of the money in a separate account. She used part of it to repair the house and saved the rest for emergencies, maternity leave, and their daughter’s future.
Ethan resented the account.
“We’re married,” he often said. “Why do you treat it like your money?”
“Because my grandmother left it to me.”
“That house is our home.”
“It can be our home without becoming your property.”
Ethan had recently started an event-planning company. He promised investors that he could attract wealthy clients, but the business lost money almost immediately.
Madison offered to help him create a realistic budget.
He accused her of lacking faith in him.
Two weeks before Linda’s party, Madison noticed a withdrawal of twenty-five thousand dollars from her inheritance account.
Ethan claimed it was a banking mistake.
Three days later, another seventeen thousand disappeared.
Madison visited the bank alone.
The manager showed her an online loan request secured against the Hawthorne Street house. The application contained her name and a digital signature.
Madison had never signed it.
She left the bank shaking and called Nadia, an attorney she had known since college.
Nadia reviewed the paperwork that evening.
“This is not a misunderstanding,” she said. “Someone accessed your account, forged your approval, and attempted to use your house as security.”
Madison looked toward the nursery Ethan had painted pale yellow.
“Can we stop it?”
“Yes. But you need to decide whether you’re prepared to learn the full truth.”
Madison thought of every time Ethan had called her paranoid, selfish, or ungrateful.
“Find everything,” she said.
Nadia did.
The money had paid for the ballroom, Linda’s jewelry, Ethan’s business debts, and a luxury car deposit.
