THE FROZEN TRANSFER / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - the evidence folder that was meant to burn

The file contained instructions written by Eleanor Vale.

If Julian Cross is arrested, assume his network remains active.

Do not reveal the full archive.

Do not trust every federal credential.

The blue folder will identify the first traitor.

Agent Reed read the message twice.

“What blue folder?” Michael asked.

“The one I carried into the baby shower.”

Elizabeth remembered the folder in Margaret’s hand and Victoria’s attempt to see its contents.

“Where is it now?”

“In the regional evidence office.”

Agent Reed reached for his phone.

No one answered at the office.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Ten minutes later, an emergency alert appeared.

A fire had started inside the evidence building.

The room containing the blue folder was burning.

Agent Reed ordered his team toward the city.

Julian, Margaret, and Victoria were transported separately under armed guard. Elizabeth and Michael returned to their home with a protective detail.

By morning, news of the investigation had spread.

Reporters gathered outside the gate.

The forged mortgage was suspended.

The trust was secured.

Julian’s arrest appeared on every major news channel.

Yet the blue folder had been destroyed.

At least, that was what someone wanted them to believe.

Agent Reed arrived at the house shortly after noon.

“The fire began in a locked evidence room,” he said. “No one should have been able to enter without federal clearance.”

“Did the folder contain something important?” Elizabeth asked.

“It contained copies of the fraudulent transfer, account registration, and the identification used in Michael’s name.”

“You already have those records elsewhere.”

“Yes.”

“Then why burn it?”

“Because Eleanor said the folder would identify a traitor.”

Michael looked toward the security officers outside.

“Maybe something was hidden inside it.”

Agent Reed placed a photograph on the table.

It showed the inside cover of the blue folder before the fire.

Along the spine was a thin silver strip.

“A tracking device?” Elizabeth asked.

“Not exactly. It recorded every fingerprint that touched the folder after I activated it.”

“Whose fingerprints were on it?”

“The device transmitted the results before the fire.”

Agent Reed turned the photograph over.

Five names were listed.

Agent Nathan Reed.

Officer Caleb Monroe.

Victoria Carter.

Margaret Carter.

Deputy Director Marcus Hale.

Michael stared at the final name.

“Marcus Hale is my uncle.”

Elizabeth knew very little about him.

Marcus was Michael’s father’s older brother, a senior federal official who had attended their wedding but avoided most family gatherings. Michael had always described him as distant, disciplined, and loyal to the government above everything else.

Agent Reed nodded.

“He supervises financial counterintelligence operations in this region.”

“Why would he touch the folder?”

“He claims he inspected it as part of the investigation.”

“Before or after you entered the baby shower?”

“Before.”

Elizabeth understood.

If Marcus had seen the evidence early, he would have known the account was opened under Michael’s name.

He could have warned Michael.

He had not.

Agent Reed continued.

“The evidence-room access log shows Deputy Director Hale entered the building seventeen minutes before the fire.”

Michael pushed back from the table.

“My uncle is not part of Julian’s network.”

“You cannot know that.”

“He spent thirty years investigating financial crime.”

“Which would give him the knowledge to hide it.”

Michael called Marcus.

The phone went directly to voicemail.

A second call produced the same result.

Agent Reed ordered a team to Marcus’s apartment.

It was empty.

His government vehicle had been abandoned at the airport.

His passport had been used to board a flight to Zurich two hours earlier.

Elizabeth looked at Michael.

“Did he ever speak to you about my trust?”

Michael shook his head.

Then he stopped.

“One time.”

“When?”

“After our wedding. He asked whether Eleanor had left you control of any international accounts.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That your finances were private.”

Agent Reed’s phone received an encrypted message.

The sender was Marcus Hale.

Nathan, the folder had to burn. Julian’s arrest activated a protocol you do not understand. Keep Elizabeth away from the hospital. Do not trust the doctor.

Elizabeth immediately thought of Dr. Lena Morris.

The doctor who had treated her after the baby shower.

The doctor who had reported the medication in her blood.

“Why would Marcus warn us about the hospital?”

Agent Reed called the hospital security director.

Dr. Morris had not reported for work.

Her personnel file was being reviewed.

The medical license attached to her employment record belonged to a real physician living in another state.

The woman who examined Elizabeth was an impostor.

Michael went pale.

“She touched the baby monitor. She took blood.”

Agent Reed requested Elizabeth’s full hospital file.

Most of it had been deleted.

One image remained from a hallway camera.

Dr. Morris was shown leaving the maternity ward with a refrigerated medical case.

She entered a car registered to North Star Private Capital.

Elizabeth placed both hands over her stomach.

“What did she take from me?”

Agent Reed enlarged the image.

A label was attached to the side of the case.

It showed Elizabeth’s name and the words prenatal genetic sample.

The forged mortgage had failed.

The trust transfer had been frozen.

Julian had been arrested.

Yet someone had obtained Elizabeth’s blood and her unborn daughter’s genetic information.

Michael read Marcus’s warning again.

May you like

Keep Elizabeth away from the hospital.

The message had arrived too late.
