Chapter 10 - the doctor without a name

The woman calling herself Dr. Lena Morris was identified through a security image taken at the hospital.
Facial-recognition software matched her to Rebecca Hale with eighty-seven percent confidence.
There were no recent official photographs of Rebecca.
Her death certificate dated back twenty-nine years, but the signature belonged to a physician connected to Cross Strategic Holdings.
Rebecca had not died.
She had disappeared.
Agent Reed searched the Vale archive for her name.
Seven encrypted files appeared.
Only Elizabeth could open them.
The first file contained a recording from Eleanor.
“Rebecca Hale came to me when Anna was pregnant. She was frightened and desperate. The child was conceived through a private medical procedure arranged outside the country. Anna wanted a family. Rebecca wanted protection from her brothers.”
Elizabeth paused the recording.
“What kind of protection?”
Agent Reed opened the next file.
It documented illegal financial operations controlled by David and Marcus Hale’s father, William Hale. Rebecca had discovered that the family used government contacts to hide money for wealthy clients.
She threatened to expose them.
Soon after, she was declared dead.
Anna helped her escape.
Together, they had Elizabeth.
Michael sat motionless.
“My grandfather built the network?”
“It appears he helped build an early version,” Agent Reed said. “Julian expanded it.”
The third file included a photograph of Anna holding baby Elizabeth while Rebecca stood beside her.
For the first time, Elizabeth saw both of her biological parents.
The realization was overwhelming.
Margaret had not simply hidden an adoption.
She had erased two mothers.
The fourth file explained why.
After Anna died in a car crash, Rebecca feared she would be found by the Hale network. Eleanor arranged for Margaret to adopt Elizabeth publicly while Rebecca disappeared under another identity.
Margaret was supposed to protect her.
Instead, Margaret became consumed by the inheritance that followed Elizabeth.
“Did Rebecca abandon me?” Elizabeth asked.
Agent Reed looked at the remaining encrypted files.
“We do not know.”
The fifth file was corrupted.
The sixth required a second verification code that had not yet been located.
The seventh opened automatically.
It contained hospital surveillance footage from two days earlier.
Rebecca entered Elizabeth’s room disguised as Dr. Morris.
She examined the monitor and collected blood.
Then she leaned near Elizabeth’s sleeping face.
The room microphone captured her whisper.
“I am sorry I came back too late.”
Elizabeth replayed the sentence.
“She did not sound like she wanted to hurt me.”
Michael remained cautious.
“She still impersonated a doctor and stole a genetic sample.”
“Maybe she was confirming I was really Anna’s daughter.”
“Why now?”
Agent Reed answered.
“Because Julian was arrested. The archive became active, and anyone connected to the original network knew Elizabeth had unlocked it.”
A new message arrived through the archive system.
It was addressed directly to Elizabeth.
The sender identified herself as Rebecca.
Do not give the federal government the complete archive. Nathan Reed is honest, but his director is not. Marcus tried to warn you. The final Vale account contains evidence against the person controlling the investigation.
Agent Reed read the message without defensiveness.
“My director is Helen Ward.”
The name appeared dozens of times in the archive.
Most references were sealed behind the missing second verification code.
Michael looked at him. “Can she access the evidence already transferred?”
“Yes.”
“Can she erase it?”
“Not without leaving a record, but she can limit who sees it.”
Elizabeth received another message.
Meet me at the old Vale greenhouse before sunset. Come with Victoria. No federal agents.
Agent Reed immediately rejected the instruction.
“You are not meeting an unidentified fugitive.”
“She is one of my mothers.”
“She may also be working with Julian.”
“Julian believed he was my father. Rebecca’s survival threatens everything he built.”
“Or they worked together to create that belief.”
Elizabeth looked toward Michael.
He had hidden his meeting with Julian and nearly allowed his identity to destroy them. Yet he had also remained beside her through every revelation.
“What do you think?”
He appeared surprised that she had asked.
“I think Rebecca took a dangerous risk to get close to you. People do that for love, fear, or power. We do not know which one.”
“Would you go?”
“Yes.”
Agent Reed shook his head.
Michael continued.
“But not alone, and not without protection.”
Elizabeth thought of Victoria.
“Why does Rebecca want my sister there?”
Agent Reed checked Victoria’s interview records.
She had been transferred to a secure holding facility that morning.
When he called the facility, no one answered.
He tried a second number.
A supervisor finally responded.
Victoria Carter was gone.
The transport order authorizing her release carried Director Helen Ward’s signature.
A security camera showed Victoria leaving through a side entrance.

The woman waiting for her wore a dark coat and a medical mask.
Rebecca Hale had already taken Victoria to the greenhouse.
