THE FROZEN TRANSFER / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - the house with two deeds

Victoria escaped through a broken greenhouse panel.

Several officers followed her, but Rebecca activated the estate’s old irrigation system. Water erupted across the grounds, clouding the security cameras and turning the paths into mud.

Agent Reed used the confusion to move Elizabeth and Michael through a service tunnel beneath the greenhouse.

Rebecca led them to an abandoned caretaker’s cottage where Marcus Hale was waiting.

Michael froze when he saw his uncle.

Marcus looked older than he had at their wedding. His suit was torn, and his left arm was bandaged.

“You burned the folder,” Michael said.

“I prevented Ward from uploading its tracking signature.”

“You let me believe my identity was connected to criminals.”

“I could not contact you safely.”

“You always have an explanation.”

Marcus accepted the accusation.

“I failed your father in the same way.”

Michael’s anger changed.

“Rebecca says David was killed.”

Marcus looked at her.

“She is right.”

“Did you know?”

“I learned the truth three years later. By then, Julian controlled the investigation, Margaret had rewritten the timeline, and Rebecca was presumed dead.”

Michael turned away.

Elizabeth understood his pain.

Her own life had been rewritten by adults who called secrecy protection.

Now Michael was discovering that his childhood had been built on the same lie.

Agent Reed connected the laptop to an independent satellite device.

Victoria still had the verification card, but Rebecca had copied its temporary authentication signal.

They had less than one hour before the code expired.

The final archive opened.

Among the files was the original deed to Elizabeth’s house.

It showed that the property had been owned by Anna Vale.

After Anna’s death, Eleanor placed it in trust for Elizabeth.

A second deed existed.

It transferred the same property to Margaret Carter.

The second document was signed two days after Anna died.

The signature belonged to Anna.

A dead woman had supposedly transferred the house.

“That deed was used for the forged mortgage,” Agent Reed said.

“Then the lender should have noticed the dates,” Elizabeth replied.

“The lender was part of the network.”

North Star Private Capital existed only on paper. Julian created it to place false debts against valuable homes, then seize them through controlled courts.

Helen Ward protected the process by blocking federal reviews.

Marcus opened another file.

It showed the original arrangement between Margaret and Julian.

Margaret would receive control of Anna’s daughter and access to the Vale estate.

Julian would receive any archive materials Eleanor attempted to pass through Elizabeth.

Margaret signed the agreement.

Julian signed as guardian.

The third signature belonged to Helen Ward.

Elizabeth read the date.

It had been signed when she was six months old.

“My entire life was a transaction.”

Rebecca moved closer.

“No. They tried to make it one.”

“You paid Margaret instead of coming for me.”

“I believed you were safe with her.”

“You visited the hospital only when the archive opened.”

Rebecca’s voice broke. “I watched you from a distance for years.”

“That is not the same as being there.”

“No.”

“You do not get to arrive now and ask me to understand.”

“I know.”

Elizabeth turned away.

She appreciated that Rebecca did not defend herself.

Outside, helicopters crossed the sky.

Ward was expanding the search.

Agent Reed needed to release the archive publicly before she could regain control.

But without Victoria’s card, the system would not authorize publication.

Michael searched Victoria’s recent messages.

She had contacted only one person.

Margaret.

“She is going to our house,” Elizabeth said.

“Why?” Agent Reed asked.

“Because Margaret knows where Eleanor hid the original physical records.”

Rebecca shook her head. “The house was searched.”

“Not the entire house.”

Elizabeth remembered the hidden nursery compartment.

The metal lever disguised as a nail.

Eleanor had built secrets inside ordinary places.

“The deed is hidden where Margaret would never willingly look,” Elizabeth said.

Michael understood first.

“Victoria’s room.”

As children, Victoria had occupied the largest bedroom in Margaret’s home. She believed everything inside it belonged to her. Margaret rarely changed anything without Victoria’s permission.

If Eleanor wanted to hide evidence from Margaret, she might place it inside the space Margaret treated as sacred.

They reached the Carter house before Ward’s teams.

The front door was open.

Upstairs, Victoria was pulling apart the wall behind her childhood mirror.

Margaret stood behind her holding a fireplace poker.

“Give me the card,” Margaret said.

Victoria turned.

“You knew the money came from Rebecca.”

“It was payment for raising Elizabeth.”

“It was supposed to protect her.”

“I gave her a home.”

“You gave her whatever was left after you gave me everything.”

Margaret’s expression softened.

“You were my real daughter.”

Elizabeth entered the room.

“And I was your investment.”

Margaret looked at her.

For a moment, guilt appeared.

Then it vanished.

“You received a fortune simply because Anna gave birth to you.”

“I received lies, surveillance, and a mother who planned to take my child.”

“I was trying to preserve this family.”

“You tried to replace me with Victoria.”

Margaret tightened her grip on the poker.

Victoria removed the verification card from her pocket.

Margaret held out her hand.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“I built your life.”

“With Elizabeth’s money.”

“I chose you every day.”

Victoria began crying.

“That was the problem.”

She handed the card to Elizabeth.

Margaret raised the poker.

Michael stepped between them.

Before Margaret could move, Agent Reed entered with two officers.

“Drop it.”

Margaret looked from the weapon to her daughters.

Then she did something no one expected.

She struck the mirror instead.

Glass broke across the floor.

Behind it was a sealed metal compartment.

Inside lay the original deed, Anna’s letters, and a red ledger.

Margaret stared at it.

She had not known it was there.

Elizabeth lifted the ledger.

The first page contained a list of payments.

The final entry had been written only one week earlier.

Baby Hale custody transfer.

Authorized recipient: Victoria Carter.

Victoria read the line.

Her face collapsed.

“You were going to give me Elizabeth’s baby.”

Margaret said nothing.

“You told Julian I agreed?”

“I knew you would love the child.”

Victoria stepped backward.

“You did not choose me because you loved me.”

“Victoria.”

“You chose me because you believed I was easier to control.”

Margaret reached for her.

May you like

Victoria moved beside Elizabeth.

For the first time in their lives, the two sisters stood on the same side of the room.
