Chapter 4 - the key Michael tried to hide

Michael remained near the nursery door.
He looked at the empty room, the yellow blanket, and the note accusing Elizabeth of stealing Victoria’s life.
Then his eyes returned to the brass key in Agent Reed’s hand.
“Julian told me the key could stop an illegal transfer,” he said.
Elizabeth folded her arms over her stomach. “And you decided I did not need to know?”
“I did not know whether he was telling the truth.”
“So you met him secretly.”
“Yes.”
“You lied about where you were going.”
“Yes.”
“You asked me questions about the trust’s withdrawal rules.”
“I was trying to understand what he wanted.”
Elizabeth felt anger rise through the fear.
“What exactly did he want?”
Michael looked toward Agent Reed.
The agent nodded for him to continue.
“Julian contacted me ten days ago. He said someone inside the family had copied Elizabeth’s signature and was preparing to transfer the trust. He claimed Eleanor had created a private protection system, but that the protection could only be activated with a key hidden inside the house.”
“You knew there was something hidden in the nursery,” Elizabeth said.
“I knew Julian believed there was.”
“You built the wall.”
“I rebuilt the wall after a water leak. I never saw the compartment. Julian sent the photograph three nights ago. It showed the key lying beside an old floor plan.”
“Why would he help us?”
Michael’s jaw tightened. “I do not think he was helping us.”
Agent Reed stepped forward. “What happened during your meeting?”
“Julian asked me to convince Elizabeth to sign a temporary management agreement. He said it would move the trust into a protected account until the threat passed.”
“Did you see the agreement?”
“Yes.”
“Did you keep a copy?”
“No. He would not let me take it.”
“Did you sign anything?”
Michael hesitated.
Elizabeth saw the answer before he spoke.
“What did you sign?”
“A confidentiality acknowledgment.”
Agent Reed’s expression hardened. “Using what device?”
“Julian’s tablet.”
“Did it require facial verification?”
“Yes.”
The account had been opened using a video of Michael reading a security phrase.
Elizabeth felt suddenly unsteady.
“What phrase did he make you read?”
Michael closed his eyes briefly.
“I, Michael Andrew Hale, confirm that I am acting voluntarily and understand the transfer authority granted under this agreement.”
Agent Reed swore under his breath.
Michael looked at Elizabeth. “He told me it was a standard confidentiality statement. I did not know he was recording separate lines to create an account.”
“You did not read the agreement?”
“The screen showed only the signature page.”
“And you signed anyway.”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Elizabeth laughed bitterly. “Everyone who betrays me seems to believe they were protecting me.”
Michael took one step closer.
“I should have told you. I know that. But I never touched your money.”
“The account was in your name.”
“Because Julian built it in my name.”
“And the notification on your phone?”
“Agent Reed’s team found a hidden application installed through the financial document Julian sent me. The transfer message was programmed to appear when the agents arrived.”
Agent Reed confirmed it with a nod.
“The account is fraudulent, but Mr. Hale’s decision to sign an unread document gave Cross what he needed.”
Michael looked toward the missing crib.
“Where is everything?”
“Someone emptied the nursery,” Elizabeth said.
He saw the yellow blanket.
“Victoria.”
“Or someone who wants us to believe it was Victoria.”
Agent Reed placed the key inside a small evidence pouch.
“The number may correspond to a vault, deposit box, or private registry. We are checking Eleanor Vale’s financial records.”
Michael stepped into the room.
Elizabeth moved away.
He stopped immediately.
“I am sorry.”
“That does not restore trust.”
“I know.”
“You suspected my family was planning something, and you chose secrecy. You gave Julian your signature, your face, and your voice. Then you walked into my baby shower knowing there might be an attack on the trust.”
“I did not know they would do this.”
“You knew enough to warn me.”
Michael had no answer.
Agent Reed’s phone rang.
He listened for several seconds, then asked the caller to repeat something.
When he ended the call, his attention went directly to Elizabeth.
“We found the storage unit where your nursery furniture was taken.”
“Who rented it?”
“Victoria Carter.”
Elizabeth was not surprised.
“There is more,” Agent Reed said.
“What?”
“The storage unit contains your crib, clothes, rocking chair, and several boxes of documents from Margaret’s home.”
“What kind of documents?”
“Medical records. Adoption papers. Letters from Eleanor.”
Elizabeth remembered the recording.
Margaret has spent her life believing the wrong daughter belongs to the Vale bloodline.
“Whose adoption papers?”
Agent Reed looked at Michael before answering.
“Yours.”
The room became completely silent.
Elizabeth shook her head.
“I was not adopted.”
“The file lists Margaret and Thomas Carter as your adoptive parents.”
“My birth certificate says they are my biological parents.”
“This file includes another certificate.”
Agent Reed opened a photograph sent from the search team.
The original document listed Elizabeth’s date of birth, but the mother’s name was not Margaret Carter.
It was Anna Vale.
Elizabeth stared at the screen.
Anna Vale had been Eleanor’s youngest daughter.
Margaret’s younger sister.
She had died when Elizabeth was an infant.
According to every story Elizabeth had ever heard, Anna had never married and never had children.
Michael moved closer, forgetting the distance Elizabeth had demanded.
This time, she did not step away.
Agent Reed’s phone rang again.
He listened, his expression changing.
“The storage team found a video file,” he said.
“Of what?” Michael asked.
“Margaret speaking to Julian Cross two weeks ago.”
Agent Reed turned the volume up.
Margaret’s recorded voice filled the empty nursery.
“Once Elizabeth loses the house and Michael takes the blame, she will have nowhere left to go. Then we offer her safety in exchange for the key.”
Julian’s voice answered.
“And if she refuses?”
May you like
Margaret replied without hesitation.
“Then Victoria raises the baby.”
