Chapter 8 - Noah's Name

The trust documents were stored in a law office across town.
Emily, Marcus, and Richard arrived separately.
Susan was already there.
Emily stared at her mother.
“You knew.”
Susan looked heartbroken.
“I knew Daniel was trying to protect you.”
“You knew he was alive?”
Susan shook her head.
“Not at first.”
“When did you find out?”
“Six months ago.”
Emily stepped back.
“You knew for six months?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of Richard?”
Susan looked at her husband.
“Of everyone.”
The lawyer entered carrying a sealed box.
He placed it on the table.
“This was delivered by Daniel Parker's attorney.”
Emily stared at the box.
The lawyer explained that the contents could only be released under specific conditions.
Noah's name was on the paperwork.
Emily opened the box.
Inside was a small hard drive.
A key.
And a letter.
Daniel's handwriting.
Emily,
If you have reached this point, then the truth is already moving faster than I can control.
I need you to understand something.
The money does not belong to me.
It never did.
It belongs to the people your father took it from.
Emily stopped reading.
Richard looked away.
She continued.
I found evidence that Coleman Holdings was used to hide money belonging to hundreds of families.
Some lost businesses.
Some lost homes.
Some lost everything.
I could expose it.
But doing so without proof would destroy innocent people along with the guilty.
So I built something they could not erase.
The hard drive contained the proof.
Emily looked at Marcus.
“Can we open it?”
The lawyer shook his head.
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because the account requires biometric verification.”
Emily frowned.
“Whose?”
The lawyer looked at Noah.
Emily froze.
“Noah?”
“Yes.”
“The trust was designed so that only Daniel's direct heir could unlock the final files.”
Emily looked at her son through the glass office door.
He was sitting with Susan.
Five years old.
Too young to understand any of this.
Richard whispered,
“Daniel planned everything.”
Marcus nodded.
“He always did.”
Then Vanessa entered the office.
Everyone turned.
She smiled.
“Did I miss something?”
Emily stared at her.
Vanessa's eyes fell on the box.
Her smile disappeared.
May you like
For the first time, fear crossed her face.
She understood exactly what Emily was holding.
