Chapter 13 - The Last Account

Daniel took Emily and Noah to an apartment hidden above an old bookstore.

Marcus was already there.

Emily stared at him.

“You knew.”

Marcus nodded.

“I knew he was coming.”

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You did the right thing.”

Emily crossed her arms.

“I don't know who I can trust anymore.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You can trust yourself.”

He opened a laptop.

A map appeared.

Northbridge Capital was at the center.

Around it were hundreds of accounts.

Millions of dollars.

But the numbers did not belong to Richard.

They belonged to ordinary people.

Families.

Employees.

Small business owners.

People who had invested their savings.

Emily realized what Daniel had been trying to protect.

“This isn't about your family.”

“No.”

“It is about all of them.”

“Yes.”

Daniel showed her another file.

A list of transfers.

The final destination was hidden.

Emily recognized the silver circle symbol.

“Who controls this?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I never found out.”

“But you said you knew.”

“I knew who was involved.”

“Not who was behind them.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Emily stared at the screen.

“Then what are we doing?”

Daniel closed the laptop.

“Tomorrow, the system changes ownership.”

“Who is buying it?”

“I don't know.”

“Then how can you stop them?”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“I don't have to.”

Emily frowned.

“What?”

“The person buying Northbridge will expose themselves.”

Richard suddenly called.

Daniel answered.

Richard's voice came through.

“You shouldn't have come back.”

Daniel replied,

“I had to.”

“Emily is in danger.”

“I know.”

“You don't understand. Vanessa has the original account.”

Daniel went silent.

“What account?”

“The one you thought you destroyed.”

Emily looked at him.

Richard continued.

“If she activates it, everyone connected to Northbridge becomes exposed.”

Daniel's face changed.

“What is she planning?”

Richard whispered,

“She isn't planning to expose us.”

A pause.

“She is planning to erase us.”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“We have one night.”
