Chapter 1 - The Door That Closed

Emily drove through the dark streets with both hands tight around the steering wheel.

Noah sat quietly in the back seat.

The glow from passing streetlights moved across his face.

He had stopped asking questions.

That worried Emily more than anything.

She glanced at him through the rearview mirror.

“Are you okay?”

Noah nodded.

“Are you sure?”

Another nod.

Emily pulled into the driveway of their small suburban home.

Daniel had bought the house three years earlier.

It was not large.

It was not impressive.

But it had always felt safe.

Emily parked.

Before she could open her door, Noah whispered,

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Did Grandpa really mean it?”

Emily turned around.

“Yes.”

“Does that mean we aren't family anymore?”

Emily climbed into the back seat and wrapped her arms around him.

“You will always have family.”

“Who?”

Emily closed her eyes for a moment.

“Me.”

Noah hugged her.

Emily held him tightly.

She did not tell him that she was frightened.

She did not tell him that Richard’s reaction to Daniel’s name had confirmed her worst suspicion.

And she definitely did not tell him that Daniel had spent the final year of his life preparing for exactly this kind of night.

After Noah fell asleep, Emily went downstairs.

She opened the bottom drawer of an old cabinet.

Inside was a black envelope.

Her fingers trembled as she picked it up.

Daniel had written one sentence across the front.

OPEN ONLY IF THEY TURN AGAINST YOU.

Emily stared at it.

She had received the envelope nine months earlier.

Daniel had been dead for eleven months.

He had never explained what was inside.

At the time, Emily had refused to open it.

She had believed grief was making everything feel like a conspiracy.

Now she was not so sure.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a key.

A small silver key.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

Emily read it twice.

Then a third time.

Her face went pale.

The note contained only seven words.

THE MONEY WAS NEVER WHERE THEY THOUGHT.

Emily sat down.

For years, Richard had told everyone that Daniel had died leaving almost nothing behind.

A failed startup.

Some debts.

A modest life insurance policy.

A few personal possessions.

That was the story Emily had believed.

But Daniel had never been careless with money.

He had never been interested in luxury.

He had always told Emily that wealth was only useful if it gave you freedom.

She had thought it was philosophical.

Now she wondered if he had been warning her.

Her phone suddenly rang.

Emily nearly dropped the note.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

No response.

“Hello?”

A man's voice finally came through.

“Mrs. Coleman?”

Emily stood.

“Who is this?”

“You need to stop asking questions about Daniel.”

Her heart began pounding.

“Who are you?”

“You should have stayed away from your father's business.”

Emily stared at the dark window.

“You called me.”

The line went silent.

Then the man said,

“Exactly.”

The call ended.

Emily remained frozen.

A moment later, she heard a sound upstairs.

Noah.

She rushed up the stairs.

His bedroom door was open.

The window was closed.

Noah was asleep.

But on his desk was something that had not been there before.

A small white envelope.

Emily walked toward it.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel was standing outside a building she had never seen before.

Beside him was Richard.

And between them stood another man.

A man Emily had never met.

On the back of the photograph were four words.

ASK YOUR FATHER WHO HE IS.
