Chapter 6: When the Truth Appeared
The large screen behind the reception desk lit up.
Every eye in the lobby turned toward it.
The footage began.
There was Clara in the corner of the elevator, holding her folder politely. Evelyn stood in front of her, clearly angry.
The video had no sound, but the truth did not need words.
Everyone watched as Evelyn stepped toward Clara.
Everyone watched as she grabbed Clara’s name tag.
Everyone watched as she shoved Clara first.
Clara did not attack. She only raised her hands and stepped back.
Then Evelyn rushed forward, lost her balance, and struck her own arm against the rail.
The video ended.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
The silence was heavier than the accusation had been.
Victoria slowly released her daughter’s arm. Evelyn lowered her eyes, but it was too late. Dozens of guests were still recording.
Daniel turned to Mark.
“You ordered my employee to apologize before checking the evidence?”
Mark stammered, “I was trying to protect the hotel’s reputation.”
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“A reputation is not protected by sacrificing innocent people.”
Mark lowered his head.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“Miss Hart, do you have anything to say to Clara?”
Evelyn pressed her lips together.
“It was a misunderstanding.”
Clara gave a tired, bitter smile.
“A misunderstanding is when someone remembers something wrong. You lied.”
Victoria’s face tightened.
“My daughter was still hurt.”
Daniel replied, “She was hurt because of her own actions.”
Then an older man in a navy suit stepped forward. He was one of the major sponsors of the charity gala.
“I have seen enough,” he said. “If the Hart family remains connected to today’s event, I will withdraw my sponsorship.”
Victoria turned toward him in disbelief.
“You cannot be serious.”
“I am,” he answered. “Charity should not be represented by people who humiliate workers and pretend to be victims.”
