Chapter 4: The Public Humiliation
Security approached Clara as if she were dangerous.
They did not hurt her, but when they held her arms and led her into the lobby, every guest watching assumed she was guilty.
Evelyn stood near her mother, clutching her arm and crying.
“She pushed me,” Evelyn sobbed. “I only asked a question, and she attacked me.”
Victoria Hart turned toward Clara with cold fury.
“You dared to hurt my daughter?”
Clara shook her head.
“That is not true. Please check the elevator camera. She grabbed me first.”
Before Clara could say another word, Victoria slapped her across the face.
The sound echoed through the lobby.
Clara stumbled back. Her cheek burned. For a moment, she could not breathe.
People whispered around her.
“Did that employee really attack a VIP guest?”
“She’s definitely getting fired.”
“How embarrassing for the hotel.”
Mark Lawson hurried over, his face full of panic. But he did not ask Clara what had happened. He did not ask security to check the footage. He only bowed slightly to Victoria.
“Mrs. Hart, I’m deeply sorry. We will handle this immediately.”
Victoria pointed at Clara.
“Make her kneel and apologize to my daughter.”
Clara lifted her head.
“I did nothing wrong. I will not apologize for a lie.”
Mark turned sharply.
“Clara, do you know who you’re speaking to?”
“Yes,” Clara replied. “But I also know the truth.”
Evelyn cried louder.
“I came here for a charity gala, not to be attacked by hotel staff!”
Victoria glared at Mark.
“If this hotel does not give us a public apology, my lawyers will hear about it. Every sponsor in that ballroom will know how your hotel treats important guests.”
Mark’s face went pale.
He looked at Clara.
“Apologize. Now.”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears, but she did not lower her head.
“Please check the camera.”
Mark lowered his voice.
“You are making this worse. One apology can end everything.”
Clara answered quietly.
“No. It would not end everything. It would make her lie become the truth.”
Mark’s expression hardened.
“You are just an employee.”
