Chapter 2: A Job She Could Not Afford to Lose

Clara Hayes was twenty-four years old and worked as a guest service assistant at the Royal Harbor Hotel, one of the most famous five-star hotels in Miami.
To the guests, the Royal Harbor was a palace of marble floors, golden chandeliers, ocean-view suites, and private elevators. To Clara, it was something much simpler.
It was rent.
It was food.
It was her younger brother’s school fees.
Clara had no rich parents, no powerful connections, and no one to protect her if she lost her job. She had grown up learning that kindness did not always win, but honesty had to remain.
That morning, the hotel was busier than usual. A charity gala was being held in the grand ballroom, and many wealthy families were arriving one after another.
The staff had been warned before the shift began.
“Be careful with every VIP today,” Mark Lawson, the shift manager, told them. “Especially the Hart family. One complaint from them can damage the hotel’s name.”
Clara nodded quietly.
She understood how hotels worked. A guest could be rude, unfair, even cruel, and employees were still expected to smile.
At ten o’clock, Evelyn Hart entered the lobby with her mother.
Evelyn wore a white designer dress and sunglasses even though she was indoors. Victoria Hart walked beside her with the confidence of someone who believed every room belonged to her.
Mark rushed forward immediately.
“Mrs. Hart, Miss Hart, welcome. Your presidential suite is ready.”
Evelyn barely glanced at him.
“It better be,” she said coldly.
A few minutes later, Clara was asked to bring the Hart family’s spa schedule, dinner reservation, and private service papers upstairs.
She checked the folder twice, took a deep breath, and stepped into the VIP elevator.
Just before the doors closed, Evelyn entered behind her.
The elevator became silent.
Clara lowered her head politely.
“Good morning, Miss Hart. I’m bringing your service documents to your suite.”
May you like
Evelyn slowly removed her sunglasses and looked Clara up and down.
That look alone was enough to make Clara’s stomach tighten.
