Chapter 9 - The Dinner Invitation

The woman in the pale coat escaped through the underground garage.

Maya disappeared with her.

Building cameras showed them entering a gray vehicle registered to a company owned by Mercer Holdings. The vehicle was found abandoned an hour later with no fingerprints inside.

Adrian denied knowing anything about it.

Through his attorney, he claimed Elena and Maya were fabricating evidence to extort the Mercer family.

Celeste sent Elena a handwritten invitation to Sunday dinner.

It arrived with a bouquet of white roses and a message.

Every misunderstanding can be resolved when a family speaks honestly.

Rowan told Elena not to attend.

“That dinner is designed to intimidate you,” he said.

“Then it will reveal what intimidates them.”

“You already have enough to refuse the property transfer.”

“I need to know what they did to Claire.”

“That is now a police investigation.”

“An investigation you admitted could be compromised.”

Rowan did not argue.

The recovered portable drive remained encrypted. Cybercrime specialists found references to a hidden partition called ORCHARD, but they could not open it.

The old phone had stopped working.

The black notebook was placed in a secure evidence facility outside Rowan’s department. Copies went to a federal financial-crimes unit.

For the first time, the Mercers faced scrutiny they could not quietly remove.

Yet Elena felt less safe.

Adrian had moved out of the estate after she obtained a temporary protection order. Celeste remained there with several relatives, insisting she was preserving family unity.

Elena stayed in the condo.

She changed the locks, installed a new security system and activated the camera above the entry hall.

Each night, she checked the footage for the woman in the pale coat.

Claire never returned.

Three days before the dinner, Maya appeared outside the condo.

She looked exhausted but unharmed.

Elena opened the door only after confirming Maya was alone.

“Where have you been?”

“Keeping Claire alive.”

“Was that Claire at the elevator?”

“No.”

“You identified her from the photograph.”

“I identified someone who wanted Adrian to believe she was Claire.”

“Who was she?”

“A woman Claire trusted.”

“Where is Claire?”

“I do not know.”

Elena almost closed the door.

Maya placed her hand against it.

“I can prove I am not lying.”

“With what?”

Maya produced a silver flash drive.

“The missing item from box 417.”

Elena stared at it.

“You opened the box.”

“Claire did.”

“Then she is alive.”

“She was alive eleven days before you went to the bank.”

“Where is she now?”

“I do not know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because Claire never stays in one place after making contact.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian is not the only person looking for her.”

Maya entered the condo and locked the door.

She explained that Claire had contacted her months earlier through coded messages. Claire believed Adrian was preparing to repeat the widow chain with Elena’s property.

The condo had become valuable for a second reason.

Claire had embedded access credentials to the Orchard files somewhere inside its original security network.

“When Adrian upgraded your system,” Maya said, “he was searching for them.”

“Did he find them?”

“No. Lydia moved the credentials.”

“Where?”

“Onto this drive.”

Elena reached for it.

Maya pulled it back.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because the drive also contains video from the night Claire disappeared.”

“What does it show?”

“Adrian and Celeste forcing her into a car.”

Elena felt cold.

“Did they kill her?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

“Claire was taken to St. Helen’s. After that, someone moved her without Adrian’s permission.”

“Who?”

“That is what the Orchard files may reveal.”

Elena looked at the silver drive.

“Why bring it now?”

“Because Celeste invited you to dinner.”

“You know about the invitation?”

“She invited me too.”

“Are you going?”

“Yes.”

“Why would she invite you after everything?”

“Because she thinks I have this.”

Maya closed her hand around the drive.

“And she wants twenty relatives watching when she accuses me of stealing it.”

Elena understood.

The dinner was not only about pressuring her to transfer the condo.

It was a performance. Celeste wanted witnesses who would repeat the family’s version of events.

“What are we going to do?” Elena asked.

May you like

Maya looked toward the camera above the entry hall.

“We give her witnesses.”
