THE FIRST WIFE’S FLASH DRIVE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Broken Plate

Adrian ordered Elena to put down the phone.

She called Rowan instead.

He stood at the far end of the driveway with officers waiting in unmarked vehicles.

“Elena,” he answered.

“I am at the table. Adrian has admitted Claire accessed Lydia’s box.”

“Are you in immediate danger?”

Adrian walked around the table.

“Hang up.”

“I asked whether you are safe,” Rowan repeated.

Elena looked at Adrian’s face.

“No.”

Adrian knocked the plate from her hand.

It shattered on the marble floor.

Relatives gasped.

Elena stepped back.

“This dinner is over.”

“You are not leaving until you sign.”

“My condo is not yours.”

His hand moved.

The strike across her cheek was fast and open-handed. Pain flashed through her face.

Twenty people saw it.

No one moved.

Adrian seemed shocked by his own action for only a second. Then he looked at Elena’s phone.

“Hang up the phone.”

Police sirens approached outside.

Elena pressed her hand to her cheek.

“Twenty witnesses. One security camera.”

Maya rose and blocked Adrian.

She slipped the original silver flash drive into Elena’s hand.

“This family buried something worse.”

Adrian recognized it.

He lunged.

Maya pushed him back.

“It proves what happened to Adrian’s first wife before everyone was told she died.”

Celeste rushed toward them.

“Stop talking.”

The doors opened.

Rowan entered with uniformed officers.

Adrian grabbed Elena’s wrist, trying to take the drive.

Officers pulled him away.

The struggle shifted the dining table. The black folder taped beneath the silver serving tray fell to the floor.

Inside were forged property documents and the recent photograph of Claire outside Ashbourne Tower.

Then the lights went out.

Someone collided with Elena.

Fingers forced open her hand.

When the lights returned, the drive was gone and the camera faced the ceiling.

Rowan secured Adrian first.

Maya searched beneath the table.

Celeste remained beside the wall, breathing quickly.

“No one leaves,” Rowan ordered.

“I saw Uncle Victor near the light switch,” a cousin said.

Victor Mercer raised both hands.

“I did nothing.”

Another relative pointed toward the side door.

“It opened during the blackout.”

Rowan sent an officer outside.

Elena checked the remote camera application on her phone. The live image showed only the ceiling, but the recording had already been backed up until the moment someone moved the lens.

The audio continued.

She replayed the last seconds.

The darkness hid the image, but sounds remained clear.

A chair scraping.

The side door opening.

A woman whispering, “I have it.”

Then Celeste’s voice.

“Use the old elevator.”

Elena looked at her mother-in-law.

Celeste’s face became expressionless.

“You helped someone take the drive,” Elena said.

“I said no such thing.”

“The camera recorded you.”

“The camera was disabled.”

“Not the audio.”

Rowan played the clip aloud.

Every relative heard Celeste’s voice.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Celeste looked around the dining room and realized the witnesses she had gathered could no longer protect her. They had become evidence against her.

Rowan arrested Adrian for assault and attempted theft. Celeste was detained for questioning. Victor and the other relatives were ordered to remain while officers collected statements.

It should have felt like victory.

Instead, Elena stared at the empty space in her palm.

The drive was gone.

Maya stood beside her.

“You made copies,” Elena whispered.

Maya did not answer.

“You said you made copies.”

“I did.”

“Then why do you look frightened?”

Maya looked toward Rowan.

“The copy I gave him was a decoy.”

Rowan heard her.

“What?”

May you like

Maya lowered her voice.

“The real files were only on the original.”
