Chapter 14 - The Voice Inside Orchard

Technicians searched the condo until dawn.
They found no fingerprints, fibers or usable camera footage. The thief had entered with an authorized code, disabled the new system and removed a device no one had known was there.
The second key was gone.
Without it, the Orchard drive could not be opened inside the condo.
Maya sat at Lydia’s old dining table with both hands wrapped around a cup of coffee.
“This is my fault,” she said.
“You did not steal it,” Elena replied.
“I brought it to Celeste’s house.”
“You also exposed Adrian.”
“That was the easy part.”
“Being attacked by your brother was easy?”
“Compared to Claire’s plan, yes.”
Elena sat across from her.
“You have not told me the entire plan.”
“No.”
“Tell me now.”
Maya looked toward Rowan, who stood near the window speaking with federal investigators.
“Claire never wanted Adrian arrested first.”
“Why not?”
“Because she believed he was the most visible person in the widow chain, not the person controlling it.”
“Celeste?”
“Claire believed Celeste answered to someone else.”
“Who?”
“She did not know.”
“That is difficult to believe.”
“Claire trusted records, not guesses.”
Maya opened the laptop she had brought from the estate. Although the original drive was gone, she had copied its visible folders.
She selected an audio file labeled C.B. FINAL.
Claire’s voice filled the condo.
“If this recording is playing, Lydia failed to keep Elena away from the Mercers.”
Elena stopped breathing.
Claire had recorded the message years before Elena met Adrian.
“She knew my name?”
Maya raised a hand, urging her to listen.
“Elena Hart inherited unit 2319 because Lydia needed an owner outside the network. The condo was never selected randomly. Elena was chosen because her parents discovered the first property transfer before their deaths.”
Elena stared at the laptop.
Her parents had died in a highway collision when she was sixteen. The police had ruled it an accident.
Claire continued.
“Adrian will be sent to gain Elena’s trust when the remaining authentication system becomes active. He may believe he chose her. He did not.”
Elena remembered every coincidence in their relationship.
Adrian had first approached her at a charity auction hosted by a company connected to Lydia.
He had known the story of her parents.
He had known she owned the condo before she told him.
The recording changed.
There was a scraping sound, followed by Claire speaking more quietly.
“The Orchard files identify every person who authorized the widow chain. Do not open them through police systems. Do not give them to Samuel Rowan until he learns what happened to Anna.”
Rowan ended his call.
He had heard his name.
Claire’s voice continued.
“Samuel is honest, but honesty can be used against a man who does not know his wife survived.”
Rowan gripped the back of a chair.
Elena looked at him.
“Did your partner verify Anna’s death?”
“He found the records were amended three months after the accident.”
“By whom?”
“A physician at St. Helen’s.”
Maya stopped the recording.
“There is one more file,” she said.
“Play it,” Rowan ordered.
“It is addressed to Elena.”
“Play it,” Elena said.
Maya selected the final audio.
For several seconds, only static could be heard.
Then Claire spoke.
“Elena, I am sorry Adrian reached you before I did. By the time you learn the truth, he may have hurt you, isolated you or convinced you that protecting your own property is selfish. None of that is your fault.”
Elena touched her bruised wrist.
“The condo is not merely evidence. It is the only surviving door into Orchard. Whoever controls that door controls the proof against every family, bank and public official involved.”
Claire paused.
“When the drive returns, do not trust the person carrying it.”
The recording ended.
A notification appeared on Maya’s screen.
An encrypted device had connected remotely to the laptop.
A new folder opened by itself.
ORCHARD PARTIAL ACCESS.
Inside were nine names.
Adrian’s appeared near the bottom.
Celeste’s appeared above his.
The name at the top was hidden.
Before Maya could disconnect the laptop, a live audio channel activated.
A woman whispered through the speakers.
“Claire told you not to trust the person carrying the drive.”
Elena leaned toward the screen.
“Where are you?”
“Closer than Rowan thinks.”
“Are you Claire?”
The woman ignored the question.
“The drive is safe. The second key is active.”
“Who took them?”
“Someone Claire once trusted.”
Rowan moved toward the laptop.
“Is Anna with you?”
The line became silent.
Then the woman replied.
“Anna has been waiting for you to ask the correct question.”
“What question?”
“Why did she agree to die?”
The connection ended.
The partial Orchard folder deleted itself.
Only one file remained on the screen.
A photograph of Elena entering the Mercer estate before dinner.
May you like
It had been taken from inside the dining room.
The person controlling Orchard had been among the twenty witnesses.
