Chapter 15 - The Guest Who Was Never Counted

Three weeks after the dinner, Adrian was charged with assault, attempted coercion, financial fraud and obstruction.
Celeste faced charges connected to forged property transfers and the unlawful confinement of Claire at St. Helen’s Clinic.
Mercer Capital’s accounts remained frozen.
Nine women whose properties had been taken through manufactured defaults received emergency court orders preventing further sales. Federal investigators began tracing shell lenders across four states.
Elena’s condo was legally protected.
Adrian’s claim to it was dismissed.
The security footage from the dining room destroyed his public defense. No attorney could transform the image of him striking Elena into a misunderstanding.
For the first time, the Mercer name did not silence the people who had witnessed its cruelty.
Several relatives agreed to cooperate.
Aunt Rebecca admitted Celeste had paid family members to repeat false stories about Claire. Uncle Victor revealed that Adrian had used alternate identities for property transactions.
Even Evelyn Shaw began speaking after investigators located her son and moved him into protection.
The case against the Mercers was growing.
But Orchard remained closed.
The silver drive and the second key had vanished.
Claire had not contacted Maya again.
Anna Rowan remained legally dead.
And the photograph taken from inside the dining room proved that the person controlling Orchard had stood close enough to hear every word.
Elena returned to Ashbourne Tower after the federal interview.
Maya had moved into the condo’s guest room temporarily. Rowan arranged rotating security in the hallway, but that evening Maya was at the courthouse giving another statement.
Elena entered alone.
The new locks were intact.
The alarm had not been triggered.
She placed her purse on Lydia’s dining table and looked around the quiet rooms.
The condo no longer felt like a secret she had inherited. It felt like a place she had reclaimed.
Adrian had tried to convince her that marriage entitled him to everything she owned. His family had tried to turn witnesses into weapons. They had failed.
That victory was real, even if the larger truth remained hidden.
Elena walked to the window.
Below, traffic moved beside the river. In the reflection, she saw the red dress she had worn to dinner hanging from the bedroom door.
She had considered throwing it away.
Instead, she kept it as proof that the woman Adrian tried to frighten had not disappeared.
Her phone rang.
The caller identification showed North River Trust.
Elena answered.
“Mrs. Mercer,” the bank manager said, “someone attempted to access box 417.”
“Who?”
“The person presented your identification.”
“I am at home.”
“We know. The biometric scan failed.”
“Did you detain them?”
“They left before security arrived.”
“Do you have footage?”
“Yes, but that is not why I called.”
Elena turned away from the window.
“What happened?”
“The person did not open Lydia’s box. They placed something inside the outer compartment.”
“What?”
“A sealed package addressed to you.”
Elena called Rowan.
He told her not to leave the condo and sent officers to the bank.
Thirty minutes later, a detective delivered the package in an evidence bag.
Inside was the missing silver flash drive.
The second key was not included.
There was also a photograph.
It showed the Mercer dining room before the family arrived. The table had been set for twenty guests.
At the edge of the image, a twenty-first chair stood behind a decorative screen.
Someone had attended the dinner without being counted.
Elena turned the photograph over.
A message had been written on the back.
Ask Maya why Claire was sitting in the room.
Elena stared at the words.
Maya had insisted Claire’s location was unknown.
Yet the message claimed Claire had been inside the estate during the confrontation.
Elena inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop supplied by the investigators.
The visible files opened.
The encrypted Orchard partition requested the second key.
Then a new video appeared.
DINNER CAMERA 21.
Elena pressed play.
The recording showed the dining room from behind the decorative screen.
Relatives entered one by one.
Adrian arrived.
Celeste adjusted the place settings.
Maya appeared and looked directly toward the hidden camera.
Then, seven minutes before Elena entered the room, a woman in a pale coat stepped from the service corridor.
She removed the coat and placed it behind the hidden chair.
Her dark hair was pinned beneath a waitress’s cap. A scar ran beside her left eyebrow.
Claire Bennett had attended the dinner disguised as a member of the staff.
She moved beneath the camera and spoke softly.
“Elena will think Adrian is the danger.”
A second woman answered from outside the frame.
“For now, he is.”
“And after tonight?”
“After tonight, she opens Orchard for us.”
Claire looked toward the doorway.
“No. Lydia chose Elena because she could close it.”
The unseen woman laughed.
“That is what Lydia believed.”
Claire’s face tightened.
“You promised no one would hurt her.”
“I promised Adrian would expose himself.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No,” the woman replied. “It is better.”
The dining-room doors opened in the video.
Elena saw herself enter wearing the red dress.
Claire stepped farther behind the screen.
Before the recording ended, the unseen woman moved close enough for one hand to appear beside the hidden chair.
She wore a diamond ring shaped like a white rose.
Elena paused the video.
She had seen that ring before.
Celeste had worn one during the wedding.
But hers had been confiscated after the dinner and remained in police evidence.
Elena zoomed in.
A small inscription was visible inside the band.
L.H.
Lydia Hart.
Elena’s phone vibrated.
Maya had sent a message.
Do not open the door. I just learned who attended dinner.
Someone knocked three times.
Elena checked the hallway camera.
Maya stood outside.
She appeared frightened and kept looking toward the elevator.
Elena reached for the lock.
Her phone vibrated again.
A second message arrived from Maya’s number.
That woman outside is not me.
Elena froze.
The woman in the hallway slowly lifted her face toward the camera.
She placed one finger against her lips.
Behind her, the elevator doors opened.
A second Maya stepped out.
The two identical women stared at each other across the hallway.
Then every light on the twenty-third floor went dark.
Inside Elena’s condo, the Orchard drive unlocked by itself.

One hidden name appeared at the top of the screen.
Before Elena could read it, someone used Lydia’s original key to open the door.
