Chapter 8 - The Man Called Ledger

Adrian guided them through the underground archive while alarms sounded above.
He moved quickly, checking corners and locked doors as though he had memorized the forgotten corridors.
“Who is Ledger?” Khloe asked.
“A former hospital technician named Samuel Reed.”
“Why did my father call him the original camera ledger?”
“Because Samuel copied every recording the Vale Foundation ordered erased.”
Dr. Shaw stopped.
“The seventeen medical cases?”
“Hundreds of cases.”
Adrian reached a steel door and entered a code.
It did not open.
“The system has been changed.”
Isabella held up her silver key.
“Try this.”
The key fit into a small mechanical lock beneath the keypad.
The door opened.
Beyond it lay an underground loading area containing an old ambulance.
Adrian helped Khloe into the back while Isabella and Dr. Shaw climbed inside.
“Where is Samuel?” Khloe asked.
“No one knows.”
“You said he is a person. That does not help us if he disappeared.”
“He sent your father evidence eleven years ago. Two days later, Samuel’s apartment burned down.”
“Was he killed?”
“No body was found.”
Adrian started the ambulance.
Isabella looked toward the entrance.
“What about the archive boxes?”
“We cannot take them all.”
“Marcus will destroy them.”
Adrian handed her a small drive.
“I copied the index. Every name, date, and case number is here.”
Khloe held her father’s file against her chest.
“Is it enough to expose him?”
“No. An index proves records existed. It does not prove who altered them.”
“Then we need Samuel.”
“We need the recordings.”
The ambulance moved through a tunnel beneath the hospital.
Adrian explained that the route connected St. Aurelia to an abandoned medical warehouse three blocks away. Thomas Arden had insisted on building the tunnel as part of an emergency evacuation system.
“Why did my father know so much?” Khloe asked.
“Because he helped create the original Vale network.”
The words struck harder than anything Marcus had done.
“My father worked with them?”
“At first.”
Adrian glanced at her in the rearview mirror.
“The Vale Foundation began as a legitimate system for protecting wealthy families from kidnapping, blackmail, and financial exploitation. Your father designed secure records storage. Marcus’s father turned it into a weapon.”
“And my father stayed?”
“He tried to dismantle it.”
Khloe looked down at the unopened documents.
“How do you know?”
“Thomas recruited me.”
Adrian explained that he had once worked as a financial crimes investigator. Thomas approached him with evidence connecting hospital settlements to shell companies. Before they could bring the case forward, Thomas died.
“Why did you wait two years?”
“I did not. I brought the evidence to a federal prosecutor.”
“What happened?”
“She disappeared.”
Isabella leaned forward.
“People do not simply disappear.”
“In the Vale network, they do.”
The ambulance stopped.
Adrian checked the exit camera.
“No movement.”
They entered the warehouse.
Dusty medical equipment filled the dark interior. An old office had been converted into a temporary command center with monitors, servers, and printed maps.
A woman stood beside the central desk.
Khloe recognized her immediately.
Victoria Arden.
Her father’s younger sister.
Khloe had been told Victoria died in a boating accident fifteen years earlier.
“Aunt Victoria?”
The woman’s eyes filled with emotion.
“Hello, Khloe.”
Khloe could not move.
“You are dead.”
“That was necessary.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“It kept you alive.”
Khloe’s grief became anger.
“My father died. You did nothing.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“I tried to reach him. Marcus intercepted every message.”
“Why did my father sign the hospital blueprint?”
“Because the hidden archive was his insurance. He knew one day Marcus would come after you.”
“Marcus was twenty when this wing was designed.”
“Marcus began working for his father at sixteen.”
Victoria looked at Khloe’s stomach.
“And your baby is not the first Vale heir he has tried to control.”
Isabella went pale.
“What does that mean?”
May you like
Victoria turned toward her.
“It means Marcus already has a child.”
