Chapter 7 - Her Father’s Last Blueprint

Thomas Arden had died two years earlier.

The official cause was a heart attack suffered during a flight from Geneva to New York. Marcus had arranged the funeral, managed the press, and comforted Khloe while attorneys divided the Arden shipping empire.

Khloe inherited shares.

Marcus gained voting authority through marriage.

Until that moment, Khloe had never questioned the timing.

She stared at the blueprint displayed on the television.

“My father designed this?”

Dr. Shaw zoomed in on the signature.

“The maternity wing was planned eleven years ago. Thomas Arden’s construction company handled some of the underground infrastructure.”

“My father never owned a construction company.”

Isabella looked at her.

“He owned several through holding corporations.”

Khloe felt as if the floor had shifted beneath her.

“What else do you know about him?”

“Only what Marcus told me.”

“That means nothing.”

The map showed a concealed maintenance hatch behind one of the wooden equipment panels.

Dr. Shaw opened it.

Cold air rose from a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

“This is not on any current hospital plan,” she said.

Khloe looked at the monitors connected to her body.

“I cannot go down there with all of this.”

Dr. Shaw began disconnecting the portable sensors.

“You should not go anywhere. But staying here is more dangerous.”

Isabella found a wheelchair and helped Khloe sit.

They entered the passage one at a time.

Dr. Shaw led with a flashlight. Isabella guided the wheelchair carefully down a service ramp, one hand gripping the silver key inside her pocket.

The passage smelled of dust and old concrete.

At the bottom, they found a narrow corridor lined with sealed doors. Each door displayed a faded code.

A17.

A18.

A19.

Khloe recognized the letters from the trust documents.

“What is this place?”

Dr. Shaw opened the nearest room.

Inside stood shelves filled with paper medical records.

Thousands of them.

The hospital had converted most files to digital systems years earlier, yet these records had been preserved in secret.

Isabella pulled one box from a shelf.

The label read LAURENT, CELESTE.

Her mother’s name.

She tore off the lid.

Inside were treatment notes, photographs, and a settlement signed by Marcus’s father.

Isabella read the first page.

“My mother did not die in a car accident.”

Khloe watched her face collapse.

“She was admitted here after discovering money transfers from the Vale Foundation. They diagnosed her with severe delusions.”

Dr. Shaw examined the chart.

“These medications could have caused confusion and memory loss.”

Isabella turned another page.

A document authorized permanent institutional care.

The signature belonged to Isabella’s father.

“He said she was dead.”

Khloe placed a hand on Isabella’s arm.

Before she could speak, Dr. Shaw opened another box.

ARDEN, THOMAS.

Khloe’s name appeared beneath her father’s.

Her hands went numb.

The file contained reports from the weeks before his death. Thomas had undergone heart tests at St. Aurelia. Every result showed normal cardiac function.

There was also a letter addressed to Khloe.

The envelope had never been opened.

She unfolded it.

My dearest Khloe,

If you are reading this, I failed to reach you in time.

Marcus is not trying to inherit your company. He is trying to control something much larger. The Vale trust is built on identities, medical records, and money taken from families who believed they were protected.

Your marriage was not an alliance.

It was an acquisition.

Do not confront him until you find the original camera ledger.

The letter ended abruptly.

No signature.

A drop of dried blood marked the lower corner.

Dr. Shaw found another document beneath it.

It was a death certificate prepared four days before Thomas Arden died.

Cause of death: cardiac failure.

Khloe gripped the paper.

“They planned it.”

A light appeared at the end of the corridor.

Footsteps approached.

Isabella switched off the flashlight.

A man entered carrying a tablet.

Khloe expected Owen.

Instead, Adrian Cole stepped into view.

“You should not be here,” he whispered.

Khloe held up her father’s letter.

“He wanted me to find the original camera ledger.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Where did you hear that name?”

“It is in his letter.”

Adrian closed the door behind him.

“The ledger is not a book.”

“What is it?”

“A person.”

Then a gunshot echoed somewhere above them.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

May you like

Adrian looked toward the passage.

“They found the entrance.”
