Chapter 15 - The Face Outside the Window

Two weeks later, Marcus Vale was formally charged with conspiracy, fraud, unlawful surveillance, and obstruction of justice.
The charges did not include attempted harm to Khloe.
Prosecutors said the available footage showed manipulation and criminal planning, but several recordings had missing sections. The sedative found on the bedsheet could not be traced directly to Marcus or Isabella.
Isabella was cleared of attacking Khloe after the camera showed the fall had been accidental.
She publicly testified about the Vale archive, her mother’s disappearance, and Marcus’s secret relationship with Noah’s mother.
The testimony destroyed what remained of the Vale family’s reputation.
Eleanor Vale remained missing.
Owen Price refused to reveal her location.
Several hospital administrators were arrested. Dr. Shaw was appointed to lead an independent patient safety review. Adrian transferred copies of the archive index to investigators in three countries.
Vale Consolidated was placed under temporary court supervision.
Khloe’s shares were restored to her sole control.
For the first time since her marriage, Marcus had no legal authority over her finances, medical care, or family company.
It should have felt like victory.
In many ways, it did.
Khloe returned to the Arden estate under police protection. She converted her father’s former study into an investigation room filled with records, timelines, and photographs.
Noah moved into a protected residence nearby. Isabella visited him daily. Their connection was awkward, but real. Both had spent years believing Marcus’s carefully designed stories. Both now had to build lives from the fragments he left behind.
Three days after Marcus was charged, authorities located Celeste Laurent and Evelyn Cross in a private neurological facility in Vermont.
Both women were alive.
Both had been heavily medicated.
Isabella traveled there immediately.
Noah was not yet ready to see his mother.
Khloe understood.
Some reunions could not repair fifteen stolen years in a single moment.
Marcus requested permission to speak with Khloe from custody.
She refused every request until a package arrived without a return address.
Inside was Thomas Arden’s original wedding gift to her: a music box she believed had been lost after his funeral.
A hidden compartment contained a memory card.
Khloe watched the recording alone.
Her father appeared on screen, older and more frightened than she remembered.
“Khloe, there are truths I kept from you because I believed silence would protect you. I was wrong.”
He looked over his shoulder before continuing.
“You were born at St. Aurelia. But I cannot prove which child you were. Eleanor ordered two infants exchanged between families. One was raised as an Arden. The other was hidden.”
Khloe touched the infant bracelets beside her laptop.
Her father continued.
“I found one of the girls when she was six years old. She had already been given another name. I planned to bring you together when it was safe.”
The video distorted.
Thomas’s final words were barely audible.
“Marcus knows where your sister is.”
The recording ended.
Khloe immediately agreed to visit Marcus.
They met behind reinforced glass at the federal detention center.
He looked thinner. Without his tailored suit and carefully controlled surroundings, he seemed less powerful.
But his eyes remained alert.
“You found the memory card,” he said.
“You sent the music box.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Eleanor found your sister first.”
Khloe gripped the phone.
“Who is she?”
Marcus looked toward the guard behind Khloe.
“I cannot say here.”
“You have spent years controlling me with partial truths. That ends now.”
“I am not trying to control you.”
“You forged my signature.”
“To keep Eleanor from discovering that you had removed me as medical guardian.”
“I never removed you.”
“Your father did before he died.”
Khloe paused.
Marcus leaned closer to the glass.
“The forged authorization was designed to look like I controlled you. It gave Eleanor a reason to watch me instead of searching for the person who truly held your medical rights.”
“Who held them?”
“Your sister.”
Khloe’s heart pounded.
“How could a woman I have never met hold authority over me?”
“Because you did meet her.”
“When?”
Marcus looked at her for a long moment.
“She has been near you for years.”
Khloe thought of Isabella, Dr. Shaw, Victoria, former employees, friends, nurses, and women she had passed without remembering.
“Give me her name.”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“First, you need to understand why Eleanor separated you.”
“Tell me.”
“One sister could activate the trust.”
“And two?”
Marcus looked toward Khloe’s stomach.
“Two could dissolve the entire Vale network and inherit everything it controls.”
The phone beside Marcus crackled.
A woman’s voice whispered through the line.
“Do not tell her.”
Marcus turned toward the sound.
The detention room lights went out.
Guards shouted.
Emergency alarms began to ring.
Khloe was pulled away from the glass as the building entered lockdown.
When the lights returned, Marcus was gone.
The reinforced door behind him stood open.
On his chair lay a single photograph.
It showed Khloe asleep in her hospital suite on the night before the fall.
A woman stood beside her bed, one hand resting gently over Khloe’s.
The woman’s face was turned toward the hidden camera.
She had Khloe’s eyes.
Khloe’s mouth.
Khloe’s exact face.
Written across the bottom were five words:
YOUR SISTER HAS THE ORIGINAL RECORDING.
Khloe looked toward the detention center window.
A woman in a champagne-colored coat stood across the street.
For one impossible second, Khloe believed Isabella had returned from Vermont.
Then the woman turned.
It was not Isabella.
May you like
It was Khloe.
The stranger smiled, lifted Marcus’s silver archive key, and disappeared into the crowd.
