Chapter 3 - The Clause in the Vale Trust

After Isabella left, Khloe locked the suite door.
It took less than thirty seconds for Marcus’s private security team to unlock it from the hallway.
A man named Owen Price entered without knocking. He wore a charcoal suit and a hospital identification badge that looked recently printed.
“Mr. Vale asked me to check on you.”
“You are not hospital staff.”
“I oversee private security.”
“I did not ask for private security.”
“Mr. Vale believes it is necessary.”
Khloe picked up her phone.
“I am calling hospital administration.”
Owen did not stop her. He only smiled.
“Of course.”
The call connected to the executive office. Khloe explained that an outside security employee had entered her locked suite.
The administrator apologized.
Then she informed Khloe that Marcus had been authorized as her medical representative because of paperwork signed during admission.
“I never signed that.”
“Our system shows your electronic signature.”
Khloe looked at Owen.
He remained beside the door, calm and silent.
“I want the authorization removed.”
“I will submit the request.”
“When?”
“The legal department must review it.”
“How long will that take?”
“Normally two to three business days.”
Khloe ended the call.
She had entered the hospital on Friday.
Two to three business days could keep Marcus in control until the middle of the following week.
Owen nodded politely.
“Is there anything else?”
“Yes. Leave.”
He stepped into the hallway.
Before closing the door, he said, “Mrs. Vale, some locks are designed to make people feel safe. They are not designed to keep powerful people out.”
The door clicked shut.
Khloe called the unknown number that had sent the warning.
No one answered.
She sent a message instead.
WHO ARE YOU?
The reply arrived one minute later.
SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHY MARCUS NEEDS YOUR BABY TO BE BORN.
Khloe’s fingers trembled.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
The answer came as a photograph.
It showed a page from the Vale Family Trust.
Khloe zoomed in.
The clause was dense with legal language, but one sentence stood out.
Upon the birth of a verified biological descendant of Marcus Alexander Vale, controlling interest in Vale Consolidated shall be transferred to a protected generational trust.
Khloe read it twice.
The child’s birth would move control of the company away from Marcus personally and into a trust managed for the child.
Another photograph arrived.
This section described what would happen if the pregnancy ended before birth.
In that case, temporary controlling authority remained with Marcus until another qualified heir was born.
Khloe’s breathing became shallow.
Marcus did not need the baby to be born.
He needed the opposite.
She immediately rejected the thought. Marcus could be cold, manipulative, even unfaithful, but he would not harm his own child for corporate control.
Then another page appeared.
An amendment had been added six months earlier.
If Khloe became permanently incapacitated before the child’s birth, Marcus would serve as sole guardian of the child’s future trust and exercise all voting authority until the heir turned thirty.
Khloe stared at the words.
The amendment required her signature.
A signature appeared at the bottom.
It looked exactly like hers.
She had never seen the document.
The unknown sender wrote again.
MARCUS WINS IF THE BABY IS LOST.
HE ALSO WINS IF YOU SURVIVE BUT CANNOT SPEAK FOR YOURSELF.
Khloe pressed the call button beside the bed.
A nurse entered.
“I need Dr. Shaw.”
“She is in surgery.”
“Then call another doctor.”
“What is wrong?”
“I need my blood tested. I need the laboratory results from the bedsheet. And I need a hospital attorney who does not report to the Vale Foundation.”
The nurse looked uneasy.
“I can contact the patient advocate.”
“Do it now.”
When the nurse left, Khloe opened the photograph again.
A handwritten note was visible near the bottom edge of the page.
The note was not part of the legal document.
It read:
CAMERA INSTALLATION APPROVED. PRIVATE SUITE. DO NOT INFORM MARCUS.
Khloe looked toward the doorway.
May you like
The decorative molding above it appeared seamless.
Then a tiny red light blinked once and disappeared.
