Chapter 9 - The Envelope in Her Dress

On the wedding day, the Hale estate appeared untouched by fear.
White flowers lined the entrance. Musicians tuned their instruments beneath crystal chandeliers. Guests arrived in black cars and gathered beneath the glass ceiling of the ballroom.
Vanessa wore the altered gown.
The envelope remained inside it.
Daniel Mercer attended disguised as a guest from Hale Industries. Two investigators worked among the catering staff. Rebecca waited in a protected car nearby. Rosa remained in the bridal suite under the excuse of handling last-minute repairs.
Ellie wore the cream bridesmaid dress because she chose it herself.
“It has pockets,” she explained to Lucas.
He smiled despite the tension.
Claire carried the missing page from Mara’s letter inside her purse. Lucas had copied it and placed the original in Daniel’s custody.
The plan was simple.
Allow Vanessa and Voss to believe the ceremony would proceed.
Record their actions.
Secure the envelope, flash drive, and vial.
Arrest them before the marriage license was signed.
But Graham Voss never entered the ballroom.
At 5:40 p.m., Daniel received notice that Voss had gone directly to Ashford Behavioral Center.
At 5:45, the judge assigned to the midnight hearing arrived at the estate.
Judge Warren Pike claimed he had been invited to officiate the wedding.
Lucas had never invited him.
At 5:50, Ellie disappeared.
Claire found her stuffed rabbit beside the locked bathroom door.
Lucas ran into the hallway and heard Ellie crying inside.
He called to her.
She answered with the words that stopped the wedding.
“She said you wouldn’t want me after today.”
The lock opened.
Ellie rushed into his arms.
Vanessa followed them into the hallway, trying to explain, but Ellie pointed toward her.
“She said after midnight, another lady would be my mother.”
Lucas turned on Vanessa.
“What did you say to my daughter?”
The guests gathered behind them.
The musicians stopped playing.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Lucas, please. I can explain everything.”
Then the hidden seam tore.
The sealed envelope fell onto the floor.
Vanessa lunged.
Claire blocked her.
Lucas opened the envelope and found the forged custody petition, the declaration that he was mentally unstable, and the permanent guardianship transfer.
He read the final name.
Mara Hale.
The legal document claimed Mara was alive.
Not only alive, but voluntarily living under private medical supervision at Ashford Behavioral Center.
Vanessa tried again to seize the pages.
Daniel stepped between them and revealed his credentials.
“Do not touch the evidence.”
The crowd erupted into whispers.
Vanessa’s fear transformed into anger.
“You have no idea what you are doing.”
Lucas removed the flash drive from the torn gown.
“What’s on this?”
“Nothing that belongs to you.”
“My daughter’s name is on every page.”
Judge Pike moved toward the exit.
Two investigators stopped him.
Daniel held up the vial with a cloth.
“And this?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Rosa appeared from the bridal suite.
“She instructed me to sew it into the gown.”
The judge looked at Vanessa.
“You said the child would already be at Ashford.”
The sentence silenced the hallway.
Daniel turned toward him.
“Thank you, Judge Pike.”
The judge realized too late that every phone and security camera had captured his words.
Vanessa looked at Lucas.
Her voice dropped.
“You think Mara was a victim. She wasn’t.”
“Where is she?”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Ask the woman you trusted enough to leave alone with Ellie.”
Lucas turned.
Claire stood several feet away.
May you like
Her arms were empty.
Ellie was gone again.
